I agree that if chess is sport, then Poker has to be. But in my opinion neither chess nor poker are sport.

I think that poker is still a game

Hello, the All CardsChat Community! I think, first of all, the Poker is a Great Game,
in which need the different abilities of good sportsman, as patient, endurance, quick thinking,
and etc., and, of course, the excellent physical health... by possibility!

It's the same question as with chess.
For me it's a thinking sport, but not worthy for the olympics as I find that more for physical sports.
I don't think there would be a lot of interest for poker or chess while you have other more active games going.
I would watch the poker but that's because I like the game myself.

For me poker is an enjoyable pass time, I wouldn't consider it a sport, regardless of skill it's still also a game of chance and luck, not like Olympic sports for example.

This topic has numerous threads and has been discussed forever.

Just look up the definition of sport. Poker is not a sport. You can also call a banana an orange, but it will still remain a banana.......

Some people will find a way to justify calling it a sport, but...well.. bananas and oranges

Poker is just a game, when I imagined it on the Olympics games I got a belly laugh.

The one with the best skills wins.
All misconceptions are related to the fact that poker seems simple.

I define sport as an athletic competition between two individuals or between two teams. Sport involves physical activity imo.

That said, poker and physical sports share many similarities. They both involve competition, practice, and winners & losers. But, I think one's physical condition (especially as related wholistically to mental condition) plays an important part in poker. So the line deliniating sport from poker isn't solid.

What really sets poker apart from physical sports, imho, is variance. Most sports people, like sprinters, obtain peak condition right before a race and face little to no "luck" factors. On the other hand, I could be at the peak of my poker abilities and still lose to a newbie heads-up on a single occassion.

I suppose we could say that Poker is a more difficult pursuit than many sports activities in the long run! It takes a special talent to handle variance on a daily basis.

I think in all sport people drink. In the 80s/90s people use to drink in Premiership prior to games and still preform. But as the stakes got higher so did the level of fitness of the players this mean't less and less room for that sort of thing. So just because people drink doesn't make is not a sport.

However I do view sport as something physically exerting and while live tournament play is a battle of stamina. I wouldn't class it as a sport just yet.

Just watch some past Lex Veldhuis stream poker videos , then come and speak for poker and physical activity , lol .

It is a game, but not a game of chance. Chance suggests that anyone can win, but at the Olympics, it would be a huge field and then, only a strong player can win.

For me, physical activity is a sport, poker I would call a gamble

yes I consider poker a sport, because if we want to play at a high level we have to prepare as if it were for a competition, then we are athletes too because we have to have physical preparation, psychological preparation and etc ... And I don't see poker not a day at an olympics, because I don't think it makes much sense ...

Of course, poker like chess is a sport, it is not simple fact of luck, but of skill and strategies to win, that is spectacular because it gives you goosebumps when you play, jaajjaj

I second this. Poker is definitely a skill game, and one that requires a lot of mental stamina, but that doesn't qualify it as a sport.

This has been discussed so many times. I guess it like the flat earth theory. Some people just want to make up their own facts and tout them as real....

The definition of "sport" ALWAYS!!!! has physical exertion, physical prowess or physical activity in its description. Do you really think that putting your chips in the middle, or going to the bathroom in the break is the definition of that?

Poker is.... wait for this..... NOT A SPORT. Is there skill involved? Thankfully not often enough... but that is another topic. But, yes, skill can be a major part of some players involvement. But physical activity? Sorry, try again. Seriously. But please get all "sporty" and use those muscular fingers to type arguments about how poker is a sport. That wont make it one, but feel free.
