Do you ever have days when you feel like it's simply not your day to play poker?

Sometimes I sit down to play and, even before anything really happens, I have that feeling that things are just not going my way. Maybe I'm losing a few close hands, getting bad cards at the wrong time, or making small mistakes that I normally wouldn't make.

I know poker is full of variance, and one bad session doesn't necessarily mean you're playing badly. But sometimes it feels like everything goes wrong at once. You lose a big pot after being ahead, miss every draw, and when you finally get a good hand, someone seems to have an even better one.

On days like that, I sometimes wonder if it's better to recognize that you're not playing your best and stop for the day instead of continuing and trying to recover what you lost. At the same time, I don't want to confuse normal variance with a bad session or start blaming luck every time I lose.

Do you guys ever have that feeling that today is just not your day to play poker? If you notice it happening, do you keep playing and try to turn things around, or do you take a break and come back another day?

I'm curious how other players deal with those days

I definitely get that impression too; some days, it would have been better not to even turn on the computer. It’s just one bad run after another, and there’s no point in keeping at it, because the beating just gets worse.

Last Friday, I lost 3 pre-flop allins of AA x AQ, all of which hit Q twice on the flop. Awesome!! I stopped and stayed Saturday and Sunday without playing, getting some rest and getting rid of Zika haha

It happens at times, and I have realized the best thing to do is just step away and do something else for the day, and than come back with a fresh mind - and try again....

You shouldn't force things, lol... when I feel like it's an off day, I just shut everything down and let it slide... I'm not superstitious, but when your mood is down, even the cards just don't come your way 😅 The other day, I started an MTT session while I was tired... after three hours of play, my VPIP was under 10 and I'm not a super tight player and I tend to stray a bit from GTO ranges... and then, when I get dealt AA on the button, the SB and BB call with any old junk just to chase my bounty... one of them hits a set and the other makes a straight with a hand like J5o hahaha.

Ami has happened to me several times, the problem I haven't been able to control my temper at home, so nothing works out in poker if the player is in a bad mood.

Good morning, everyone! I started playing poker in 2018 and have been through this many times. There's always that day when I lose multiple hands where I was the pre-flop favorite—like AK vs. AQ or TT vs. 88. When playing many tables and losing several hands in a row, I stop registering and only return to play the next day. I am fully aware that this is normal in poker; your AA vs. 88 has about an 80% chance of winning, and yet you can still lose 3, 4, or 5 times in a row. It’s rare, but it can happen.

Quit the game and take a break to preserve your bankroll and your nerves. It seems there is no end to this suffering, resentment, and disappointment; it feels as though it has always been, is now, and always will be.It is precisely on a day like this that you forget how good things were—or even feel as though nothing good ever happened at all—and you find yourself living within a system that cannot be trusted. Yes, much depends on us, but what are you supposed to do when the cards simply stop falling your way, when there is no victory, and when you do everything right yet end up with nothing.

Yes when I play on ACR. Lately they've been taking me out with marginal hands. I think luck wants the outlaws to win too.

VThere are many times when it's just not a good game day, when everything goes wrong, even if you're playing correctly, but that's part of the game.

I get that feeling too. Sometimes it’s better to just call it a day instead of trying to force things and chase a win.

Yeah some days you are just not feeling it, it just feels off. You should know to stay away in such days

Because that's usually when everything goes against you, losing your flips, running bad, getting coolered etc

I would say there's tournaments you are not meant to win. But if I keep my head on straight the variance usually evens out when I get enough volume in the same evening. But it's very hard to keep your head on straight as some of the last tournament's frustration might be seeping into the next one...

At least I know I'm not the only one who gets this feeling. Today was definitely one of those days when it felt like it just wasn't my day to play poker, lol. I played more than 200 hands and basically got nothing decent. Not a single AA, KK, QQ or JJ showed up. I managed to win a few hands with smaller pocket pairs when they held up or when I managed to hit a set, but those situations were pretty rare. And whenever I finally got something like AK, AQ or KJ, my opponents somehow showed up with even stronger hands. I'd get AK and someone would have AA or KK. I'd get AQ and suddenly there was another player with a monster hand. So today wasn't really about building a big stack or making great plays. It felt more like a survival game. Just trying to find a few decent spots, avoid getting into trouble and make it to the end of the session without losing everything. I know this is part of poker and that you can't expect good cards all the time. But when you go through more than 200 hands without seeing a really strong starting hand, while the few good hands you do get run into something even stronger, it can be pretty frustrating. Days like this really test your patience. Sometimes surviving a bad card run feels like an achievement by itself.

Many days it doe not feel like my day but I just keep playing because what freeroller never stops playing!

Lately, I’ve had this feeling that I wasn’t cut out for poker man, nothing is going right, and it’s not just a one-day thing. I even catch myself saying, "Poker hates me" lol.

Yes, indeed. 😂 Well, I do not focus on my bad beats, as they are highly possible. Instead, I try to watch my gameplay. If I feel like I start to be frustrated, forcing some pots, chasing losses, etc., or acting out of my system, I will stop and take a break. If my mind is clear, the game is going bad, but I am still doing the right actions, I let it be and quit. Sometimes, it is better to close tables and come back the next day with fresh hands. 🃏
