On the contrary! Poker helps me spend money.

Of course there are some months from time to time where I have some winnings that I cash out.

They then make up for some of the deposits, but overall I can't cover my livelihood with it!

Sure You can! You can make money from almost anything if you put the Work into it! And that's the important word "WORK!"
Nothing you can do to make money comes for free! It takes Hard Work, Dedication, and Patience!
Poker is no different, You have to put in the Hours of Hard Work into it, To get anything out of it!

So does this means that on (rare) occassions you dont win anything in (cardchat) freerolls you are going to starve

My retirement income supports my lifestyle well enough. Not rich. Not poor. My poker game is recreational. Live, I play with friends who are very loose, and not very poker literate. That makes me a long term winner at that table. casinos have priced their games out of my range, so I no longer lose there - although my losses were about equal to the cost of the rake and tips. Could not get past that hump. Online, I only play on PokerStars. I have a small bankroll and have only made one deposit and one withdrawal over all the years I've been playing.
Combining all three modes, I don't make money, but the money coming in from my friends keeps me close to even.

I have to agree with you, my first thought when entering a game is am I going to enjoy Playing this, and the answer has to be Yes! Otherwise I just don't play. I have had nights when I just couldn't be bothered playing and as soon as I log-in, I have shut it down again.
Poker doesn't have to be about winning Money! The pleasure comes from just being part of the game, and if I don't feel that then I give up.
