Question... what would you do? Would you start over? Or would you give up poker entirely?

I would not give up to be honest but the 1st thing I would do is evaluate what happened. I do play within my bankroll and use good bankroll management. For me to go broke it would need to be an ugly time in poker.

1st I would look at my bankroll and make sure I did use proper management. Some players chase there loses, and I want to make sure that did not happen. Also did I more down when I should have multable times before I go the opportunity to go broke.

2nd I would do a deep review in my play. Was I pressing. Was I playing a good starting range and playing smart on the flop, turn and river. Was I making bad calls or pushing questionable hands. ect ect

While it always possible variance was bad and why I lost my roll it's much more likely something in my play was the issue. There was a time I was in a very deep downturn. When i did a deep review after 10+ months I found a massive error had developed in my game.

One thing I would not do right away is to play or deposit. I would do a deep review 1st and see what happened. After a good month or 2 or 3 I would then make my deposit and start over.

For more than 10 years of playing at Pokerstars, I started all over again several times and even had a break in the game for half a year or a year, but it never occurred to me to delete the poker client and stop playing the game for good.
The last time I lost my small bankroll in June 2022, I started earning it by playing freerolls.
Today I have about 800 dollars and a good skill in playing various tournaments and satellites to them.
I know that I'm not going to quit poker, no matter what happens.

How big was the investment? You're talking just about poker bankrolls, right? Some people leverage themselves way too far and the loss is devastating. Others are playing for a few hundred dollars and it doesn't really matter much to them. I personally don't care. I don't play with amounts that would harm me and, having played at various stakes, I know that this is something I will keep playing just as a hobby and nothing serious. It requires way too much of a commitment in time to do well over a long distance. I'll just keep freerolling and taking shots at satties and low stake games every now and then.

Losing an entire bankroll sounds like it could be disheartening, but I don't know if this would make the player necessarily want to quit poker for good. I think that type of thought only comes up regarding HOW the bankroll was lost and the emotions surrounding the situation. If poker becomes too much to deal with (financially, mentally, emotionally etc.), then the player may think about quitting (and perhaps they should in some of those cases), but simply losing their bankroll in an objective sense doesn't necessarily mean the player will feel like quitting.

p.s. Just me giving my opinion, but it should be noted that I've never experienced this. I've only played freerolls and cardschat events and homegames among family/friends. I'd like to try microstakes online or try live poker in a casino etc. but that hasn't happened yet, so I certainly couldn't speak on losing a bankroll from experience.

I have deposited dozens upon dozens of times.
If you're in your first couple of years playing poker, I'd suggest thinking of money lost as an investment in learning how to play the game.

I think that if someone is considering poker seriously, he would never quit, rather he would study again and again till he make it. However there are tons of recreational player who play just for fun and it doesn't matter if they loose their bankroll or not. I've lost many times my bankroll, I stopped playing and switched to studying the game in those periods, when I came back, I've got that feeling that I'm progressing with my game. Now I know that I have to put in the right volume of play to progress and assess my performance.

i would started again. Cardschat helps me to try to build my bankroll with freerolls. Thank it for this way.

As for losing everything I have on the bankroll, this has happened to me hundreds of times, and I never once thought of quitting playing poker, because I see poker as life, 'happy and sad', i believe that only a failed or weak person succumbs to the bad blows that he faces in life whether moral or material.
I do not think that bankruptcy is a convincing reason to stop playing poker, because it is not necessary to exaggerate the amounts with which we play poker, because it is possible to play and enjoy poker with appropriate amounts and also win good amounts if we manage the bankroll properly.

Most people are losing poker players at the stakes they play at. However if you go broke it may hint at some other mental hang ups like tilt and poor bankroll management as well.

It takes a LOT of work to become good enough at poker to ern anything that resembles good money in most western countries, you have to decide if you're willing to put in the effort to get better than your opponents.

Or you could just play for fun and not worry about making money from it. But you're not going to get rich without a lot of blood sweat and mostly tears lol

Many poker players go broke even pro’s, truth be told it’s personal and down to yourself weather you quit or weather you don’t….is it causing you hardship? Are you playing with only what you can afford? If you have been playing a long time and have won nothing of significance and aren’t getting any better no matter how much you learn I would say give up poker as a bad hobby and save your money and maybe just play for fun..? if you have been in the money and made significant profits month in and month out then stick at it … if it’s out of greed raising your stakes to fast and losing your bank roll then simply suck it up and start again…. It hurts like hell…. But it is what it is… if it’s sports betting and casino you can’t stay away from then a lot of poker sites have software that you can ban yourself from casino and sports sections … for example pokerstars …. I don’t know the ins and outs of your situation my friend but I hope something I have said will guide you in some way or another,

I would keep the sums of money low and just play for fun and not look at Poker as an investment. If you notice you keep making money maybe move up. If I assign $20 or $50 to my Poker bank roll and lose it it's nbd, if I consider my bank account as my bank roll and lose all of it that could be devastating and make me want to never play again.

If you lose what you could lose then there is no reason to think about quitting poker. Wait, take a pause or a stop and start again.

If you are losing more than you can lose and are involving money that you have for other commitments, then you may have gambling problems and should give up poker completely until you treat your problem, as this can destroy your life.
