Not a problem or something I ever have to worry about because unlike so many men I choose wisely when I choose my wife.

Cheers!!!

Do I really have a choice? Of course I choose you!
Just that I have to work on my Pokerstars project 9am-6pm daily. :ROFLMAO:

Absolutely my wife, but she would never do that. She knows I like to play and my playing doesn't take away from anything we have or do.
The question concerns a girlfriend or partner, not a wife. There is a big difference.

I would definitely choose my girlfriend. Although if you call me to talk about the main event of the World Series, I'll help you pack if you want.

Oops, my apologies. I did see that but hoped I could sneak my comment in anyways. :) Although, these days people stay in longterm relationships with "partners" and/or "girlfriends" so the difference isn't always meaningful, if at all. Nevertheless, I respectfully withdraw my answer.

She can't give me an ultimatum, but I promised her that I will never play with my money except with what I win from free games. She is happy when I give her money after bigger wins :D

I am in a common-law relationship with her and we have two children.

Later I saw that it doesn't refer to a wife :D

DON'T bluff, but apparently you have a bigger issue to deal with than the answer to this question.
May be time for an interspection of your life and value system. Good luck making your decision.

Having 2 kids together certainly adds context to this issue ... good communication and respect is key to relationships.

It's a hard thing in someone's life, you have to give up things that you like and love, personally I wouldn't force someone to do that, if they had a gambling past in which they lost money I would accept it, if they dedicated a lot of time to the game and not to her I would leave them, I don't put money to play poker, maybe I'm a crupper or win little but I love poker not everything is a question of money, I love the sport of poker itself and I enjoy it, winning money is an extra to it and hopefully one day I will crown it with a jackpot. Things like this can make them end a relationship, it applies in every sense, not just to poker

My husband would never give me an ultimatum like that - but I also would ensure there is a good balance of poker and personal life.

However if he did I would choose him. But he would have to give up golf. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Poker is my one and only love! And yes, I would choose poker. Then I would look for a girlfriend who would be a poker player, or at least be loyal to poker. :)

If you wrote this to me, the only difference with us is the paper. We have been getting along great for 10 years and our children are growing. She is a wonderful woman and the fact that we are not officially married has nothing to do with it...
Maybe I didn't express myself well, she's the only woman since I've been with her and I don't need another :D

Couldn't disagree more with this comment. It may be a big difference to you, but is not to me, I don't need a big day and the blessing of an imaginary dignitary to prove my commitment or love for my partner, and was just as committed regardless of marriage.

In my view it makes precisely zero difference.

To answer the actual question, if I was still meeting all my obligations in my relationship, then my hobby would not come into it, and if a GF decided it does then a converstaion would have to happen. The choice would be my life ahead of my GF if she was making me choose, as it is not an equal relationship if one party is unreasobly making demands. If I was allowing poker affect my life and relationship, then of course the conversation is different!

If a woman tells a man to choose between her and poker, there is something wrong. He needs to know how to balance his preferences. A little of both, without exaggeration. Before making the decision that was presented to him as an ultimatum, he should reflect on his attitudes towards his partner and his poker playing habits. Nothing in excess is healthy, and being pressured into making a decision is not at all pleasant either. I wish good luck to whoever has to make a decision like this about the best choice.

In my opinion, a relationship with a loved one is always more important. Although I got divorced, the reason for the divorce was more fundamental disagreements than poker :)

It is much easier and cheaper to end an informal relationship with a girlfriend or partner than to get a divorce from your wife.

Some will say there is no room for ultimatums under any circumstances in any relationship, but IMO it really depends on the context and circumstances.

For example, is the ultimatum given because you're playing a few freerolls a week, or because you have a severe gambling addiction that you refuse to seek help for that has cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars, you've been fired from your job, and are weeks away from being homeless due to eviction?

These are two completely different scenarios and should not be treated the same.

Her, especially if we had kids.

I think healthy relationship requires willingness to compromise and bow down to other person's preferences

I think I would be mature enough to compromise like this... I just never have had the chance to actually try this 😅
