Is it possible to earn enough money to live on in $5 buy in sit n gos?

i dont think it is possible to live off of it, but if u up the stakes it may and play like its your job, very disciplined it is possible

rake is caped in cash games. It becomes irrelevant at higher stakes.

I am not a High Stakes cash game player,however for break even (pre rake) and losing players it would seem to be very relevent.

I assume you are talking about a winning player.

I'm not high stakes either. I'm only playing 200nl. At 200nl full ring, rake costs me about $8/100 hands, i.e. 2BB/100. That's about half of the win rate of the really good regs, so it matters a bit for winners but not hugely. It's peanuts compared to the losing rate of the fishes. It only really matters for break-evenish players.

But if you move up to 2000nl, assuming half the hands are raked at a capped $3, it's $150/100 hands to be divided between 9 players, i.e. $17/100, i.e. 0.4BB/100. That's peanuts for everybody.

Although I think there are some realistic points made above, I think the answer depends on how good you are and how much you need to live.

I have a ROI of 50% (all from sngs), so it isnt impossible (admittedly at the $1 45 player sngs)

If you could win some cash and clear bonuses at the same time then $5 level might be just about achievable, but you would want to aim to move up levels until you're not just playing to survive.

I'd set yourself a target (min to survive) and then once reached play to make enough to enter the big mtts - you would need a 'safety cushion' though

Agree you'd be better off working until you know for a fact you can do it (even a bar job so you can earn enough to scrape by and hopefully get some free food thrown in)

I tried playing freerolls for a living for a month a few years ago- didnt work lol (almost made enough for rent mind you)

I actually tried to make a living (didnt need the winnings though) at $5.50 sngs.My results were that I could consistantly beat out $250-$300 per week (hardly a living).I played 12 tables at a time and averaged 60 per day(an very occasional day off) for well over a year.I was playing 9-10 hours in an average day.My ROI was 13% that was closer to 20% at 4 tables
I stopped because it was mentally taxing and It became quite boring.
I rarely play over 2 tables now and usually 1.

You need to continue devoting a lot of effort to finding a job, and in your spare time concentrate on improving your poker skills. The most important thing is to find a real job, because the poker part of your plans is just a fantasy tbh.

Tournaments are not very deep stacked. The deeper the stacks the more the skill.

Why is it that some of the greatest tournament players are absolute donks at cash games?

Also, successful cash game players are actually decent tournament players, they honestly just dont play enough donkaments. durrrr, KRANTZ, galfond, mastrblastr, etc etc are good tournament players as well as sik cash game players

1. It is possible.
2. You have to know sng strategy upside down and inside out
3. You need to be able to play a LOT of tables (like 30+)
4. If you have to ask if it is possible you're not gonna be able to do it
5. It is not worth it even if you were. You'd go insane by day 2.

If you are living in your parents basement living off of pb&j and ramen its definatley possible If your playing and your winning then there is no reason you cant up your game a little bit.

I think that this is one of the misconceptions that has given online poker it's enormous success over recent years.

You can look at somebody such as KingCurtis going and winning thousands of dollars in MTTs and think "Wow, if he can do it I certainly can!"

Or you can do some simple mental arithmetic and say to yourself "Well I have had a ROI of 50% at micro stakes, so all I need to do is play at higher stakes and I will soon be rich"

I'm still not convinced that it is actually that straightforward - but I really love the fact that this one simple concept draws so many people into playing online poker...
