I'll give that ago.
I fear the problem is my wireless, yet using a wired connection day to day would be impossible whilst I'm at my parents out of term time.
Ah well I shall start a session now and get google pinging.

I didn't have a disconnection yesterday which was pleasing. I found FTP was not within my firewalls exceptions.
Although I'm not confident this is problem solved as it has not been on this laptops exceptions long before the problems occurred.

If the problem does turn out to be the wireless, you could look into getting these.

In a nutshell.

You plug one in to the nearest powerpoint to the router and connect it to the router via a network lead.

You take the second one and plug it into the nearest powerpoint to where you want to use the computer and again connect the computer to this adapter via a network lead.

I won't go into too much detail but basically they turn your home electricity wiring into a wired network.

So with these you would have the freedom of wireless (almost) but the stability of a wired network.

So first of all we need to see if it is infact your wireless causing the problem (In my opinion its the most likely cause)

Yeah those things are freaking awesome! I have a 3 story home and the router is in the lower level, so my signal upstairs is low/very low..... So you plug one of these bad boys in the wall and you can even plug in another wireless access point or just hardwire. I forget who it is, maybe Cisco or Linksys, but they make a 3-port.... which is sweet!!!

Wow I didn't know those things were possible.
how does the thingmabob plugged in next to the router connect to the thingymabob plugged in at my room?
Surely this would need to be wireless itself and have the same problems?

My suspicion that it is the wireless derives from the fact my internet randomly cuts off now and again whilst browsing. Although the delay in reconnecting is nowhere near the size as when I disconnect whilst playing poker.

Your suspicions sound like its a wireless issue.

Wireless can be very unreliable.

How do those things work???

The electricity supply is a constant 50Hz sine wave, so using that as the carrier wave, information is modulated onto it. (told you there was little point in explaining it) .. but the important thing is that the do actually work!!!

So its not another form of wireless, the data is..... imagine its "stuck" onto the electrical wave.. it isn't exactly stuck onto it, but in essence that's modulation.

I just found a link when I was thinking about how you could solve the problem and it had some info and pictures on it.

The technology is called dLAN so you need a dLAN adapter (well 2 really).

Have a hunt around. I think I have seen them going for around £80 a pair.
