As somebody who has had experience with all forms of staking, the short answer is: It depends!

Evan Jarvis has solid advice in his post. All in all, you'd prefer to be playing your own money (because this means for are doing well and building up your bankroll).

the truth both have their pros and cons since not all are optimal for an investment, own money is the best to put it at risk, obviously, when there is an investor you could earn more in less time but the risk is losing everything in one bad move, I consider that the own money is better

I believe that a skilled player does not need investment. For a disciplined and patient player, own funds will be enough.

I like to use my own money.

I have friends that we walk into a casino, they will hand me $300 with the agreement that I owe nothing if I lose the $300 and return the $300 and split the profits if I come out ahead. Normally, I end up $40 to $60 up and don't keep any of the profit. For me, the fun of playing is reward enough.

I have done both. I always ended up quitting the stakes because as a winning poker player, I absolutely hate having to give away some of my winnings.

If I was taking shots in a higher stakes game though, where I am not sure if I have an edge, then I would consider getting a stake again.

There isn’t such a crazy person to invest money in a player like me, and even I personally avoid it as much as I can. Using freerolls, I built a solid bankroll in several rooms without exposing myself to any risk, and I played stronger tournaments by winning tickets. Anything beyond that is for better players.

This is an interesting question.

Firstly, it would be a nice problem to have - it means you're a good poker player in demand

In truth it depends on many factors:

1) The buy-in. Some players are backed at the nose bleed stakes (think Macau or high stakes MTTs). They give up a percentage for the chance to win huge prizes
2) The quality of the stable. Are they purely 'backing horses' or are they offering a team environment with full support to learn and improve your game
3) The investors. Are they poker players? If so, what standard do they play at. If you want to join a stable, you should be looking for a backer who is a better player than you and can spot gaps in your game
4) Pressure of performing for others. Some players will conciously (or subconsciously) change their decision making if representing others. A typical example is an aggressive player reigning it in. The problem is they lose the edge that got them noticed in the first place.
5) Pressure of using your own money. Some people prefer to avoid having their own money on the line as a downswing is harder to recover from.
6) The personality of the backers. Are they supportive and encouraging or do they shout and scream at the first sign of variance! :dong:

These are some of the points I've heard discussed on various podcasts and you can certainly find a more detailed analysis if you listen to pros describing their experiences.

I could never sell shares to a poker game, Once a friend asked me if I was playing a big tourney with a £100 buy-in and I said I was considering it, but £100 to me is a lot of money and he suggested we went half each. I refused saying that if we went half each I would be worried about losing his money, as well as my own.
That was not for me If I was going to play, I would only put my money at risk and If I was good enough to make the final table, then I might consider selling part of the action.

If you sell stakes to investors, and you don't perform, and they know or find out who you are, you may have created yourself a tremendous problem.

Use your own money.

Well i would like to be sponsored so could play in a big buy in tournaments, but it is important that you have a lot of good results and in GG poker you can check what is the ratio of winning and loosing tournaments for every player in "poker craft" so you may decide where will you invest.

In my Opinion there are factors to consider than just confidence and bankroll. I see cases for both.

Cash Game/Tournament?

We will start tournament first since this is where it happens most. I will ask you a question..... Would you play every wsop event if person X pays ALL the buy ins and you have to give 50% of winnings to them?

Of course you would. Be crazy not to. Your variance just went poof .No risk just rewards for you. Makes it real easy to profit as a tournament player.

If someone wants to pay all my entries for a 50% stake let me know I am Game...lol

And for cash games I would prefer to use my own bankroll so I control risk management. But if someone says they will buy into a very soft $5/$10 or higher I am all for it.

I just do not see a clear cut Yes/No answer to your question.

I think staking is very important as it will allow you to play more MTTs and give you more chances for deep runs than when you only rely on your own bankroll

I definitely come down on the side of the "play with your own money" camp. If nothing else, getting staked I'd think would make a player much more complacent.

I know some players that do that. Also play with there own $ too. It can be rewarding. If you have the BR it's worth trying. Good Luck to you..
