When I have played with girls I have lost, but that was only a few times. She hadn't really played much but was seriously killing me with all of the raising she did. When you card dead thats not what you want to be facing an aggressive opponent with only 4 players at the table. I got owned. Im a much better play with deep stacks

I am a woman poker player and I find that at some points in playing my game especially in live play it is both a destinct advantage and disadvantage as well for 1 thing I tend to get called more easily seeing how I guess they think they can sense some sort of weakness in me but on the other hand when I have a monster hand and want to be called I usually am so .... its good n bad together I suppose

New players, male or female, can be lucky, annoying, bad but mostly they are learning and make the same mistakes regardless of gender.

IMO, it is the new female player that a lot of men are often using as their example or personal experiences when they make comments such as women are weak players, not aggressive enough, don't know what they are doing, etc; This is not a fair sample or accurate. It would be the same as grouping all men into the category of loose aggressive donks. It's like comparing peanuts to zucchini, they are in 2 different categories.

So with experienced players, male or female, you will find weak, strong, loose, aggressive, tight, solid, etc; - various styles of players (as well as various personalities). I would agree that as a general rule of thumb, you will find more aggressive male players vs. aggressive female players. I do not agree that a females drive just isn't as strong as a males. In many cases, females have a much stronger drive than males because they have to prove themselves in ways males don't and are judged much more harshly on their play. Different styles do not account for wanting the same goal and how badly someone wants that goal. So for those who say females don't go deep in tourneys because they don't have the drive to do so like men, or because they don't play as well as men, I say you are ignorant.

With the ratio of female players being 1 to every 10 male players: (http://www.pokerplayernewspaper.com/viewarticle.php?id=3109 ) it is unlikely to have many women going deep in tournaments. I think most people would agree that it is normally aggression that gets a player deep in a major event such as the wsop main event. I don't know how to realistically break those numbers down to account for various styles of play and experienced vs inexperienced but I'd be willing to bet the sample size would shrink considerably in finding an experienced, aggressive female player. With that said, yes you will see fewer females going deep in tourneys due to sheer numbers, not lack of drive or inability to play as well as males.

**On a side note to tie in one of the many misconceptions about female players I'll give you an example on how this has helped me earn $$ from the men I play with (which also shows an advantage females have playing males).

Last fall I got into a conversation with some men at the casino I play at. It was a cash table and one of the guys had just shown a big bluff to his opponent. I made a comment about a big bluff I had pulled off on a tourist and several regulars said they didn't believe me. I told them it was true and they all said I don't bluff. I told them once again that I do bluff from time to time, and they wouldn't believe me. I then back-tracked on my previous statement, smiled big :D , and told them they were right, I don't bluff, but one day would like to learn how :D . (Silly female me, tried to pull a fast one on the guys to get more calls, shame, shame  ).

Since that conversation, I have increased my bluffing from about 8% of the time to 40% of the time! Let me say that again: I now bluff at the cash table about 40% of the time during live play. I get away with it about 38% of the time! It's unreal! The rare occassion I do get called on the river I will pout, make some statement that I had read in some poker book that you should bet your draws, that I didn't really like this concept and wouldn't be doing it anymore, throw my hand away (by this time the male player will usually have shown his winning hand, and look a little sad at taking the pot from a female who is just trying to learn to play like the guys and I'll have mucked my hand without them ever seeing it) and then do it again with success because they believe I have the nutz.

So for some of the misconceptions some of you men have, I thank you, and my wallet thanks you. :)

I have more stories of how women take advantages of men's misconceptions, I also have stories of how men have belittled and demeaned women at the tables. I won't bore you with them (unless you need specific examples to make a point), I just hope if you have a female player at your table, you treat her with the same respect or disrepect that you treat the male opponents. Not better, not worse, the same.

*If any of you have any serious questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

I also believe that guys do not want to lose to women, so they try not to bluff and risk their chips. More and more girls i have been seeing playing poker on television and women are going far in the main event, which is extremely challenging since their are thousands of players in that event. Women I believe will never be as good as men, but they are not too far behind.

Those guys who don't want to lose to women are discriminating pigs who don't view women as their equal but look down on them. While I think it's very sad that a man is that insecure and threatened by women, that we emasculate them by our mere presence to the point that they are embarassed to lose chips to them, I especially love to crush these types in the casino. They don't fool anyone and are especially easy to spot, even without saying a word. :)

Why do you believe women will never be as good as men? What is your theory behind this belief? I'm curious why men feel this way, if it's based solely on gender or if there's an actualy ideaology or scientific method leading to these types of conclusions.

Most women will not be as good as most men in football, arm wrestling, or weight lifting. The majority of women are not as physically strong as men. Theory based on fact. I'm curious how men back up their discriminating theory's on things such as poker that is not physically labor intensive.

In the world of poker, gender doesn't matter. If you can play and beat the big boys, I fully support it. My motive when I'm playing... treat everyone equally. Player A is just as deadly as Player B.

women and poker...women and strip poker...someones not getting any:p

I know this is off subject from the original thread but I have a question:
Is it just me or are women much pickier about who they play strip poker with than men? I personally would rather see a man who has a nice bod all around, not just one aspect. Like I would rather have Daniel negreneau in my game than Chris Moneymaker.

Don't men get just as excited no matter what female they are playing as long as they have boobs? I hear men making a lot of comments about Jennifer Tilly, she's gotten pretty big but does have an awesome chest. I would think they would rather see Jennifer Harman or Annie Duke in their game.

I could be wrong, I'm just curious.

There is definitely a difference between the way men and women play.

I have watched a few womens only tournaments on TV which are on late at night.

The play is noticeably far less aggressive with few insane bluffs. Maybe thats because women play differently or maybe its that the overall standard is lower right now as poker is a relatively new game to women. I don't mean that no woman has played it before, just that it is only just becoming a mainstream pastime for women too.

The chat also seems much tamer than in the men's games.

As a general rule of thumb, I agree, there is a difference, not as much aggression or lipping off.

The way you have this worded right under the question of why men feel they play better poker than women appears to me that you are agreeing that men play poker better than women. :(

If this is correct, I don't like it, but you of course have that right to your opinion and view point and as such I will respect that. I am curious - why? Is it due to the differing styles as a basic rule of thumb? (Which of course would lead to a whole new debate: which poker style is the best winning style? )

I also agree that poker is a more mainstream event for females of recent years. And I believe there is a tremendous amount of more widestream acceptance to us gals at the tables than ever before. :D

Just tossing this out there. From what I've noticed, women tend to have better timed aggression than some men. I'm not sure why, but it does seem that way.

Also I know some people think women are worse at math. I own how bad I am at math but I did notice something. I visualize the things others calculate. It wouldn't shock me if there were others who are bad at math who do the same thing.

Another thing is that I'm patient, maybe too patient when playing. But yeah, I'm not sure if being female has anything to do with it but I wait very patiently for cards and/or opportunity before I make any kind of moves.

I'll hazard a guess and say that women are better at spotting details. It's pretty standard in general. I'm not sure how standard for poker. Examples would be hair and makeup. I can spot the extensions + "no makeup - makeup" while guy friends just can't see them. Another might be subtle patterns in fabric. A woman might see a beautiful green jacquard chair while her male counterpart sees a green chair. That's if he's not color blind. Ya know?

Now I'm not saying that those are strengths or detriments. I'm just saying they seem to be real on average. So it wouldn't surprise me if women are generally better at picking up on patterns and tells.

About aggression. This has nothing to do with being male or female, it just has to do with playing aggressively.

I've watched bullies turn into punks in just a few short hands. I'm sure we all have. The bullies have plenty of aggression but they don't always know how to use it well. If I had to guess I'd say that until you're playing at a pretty high level they rarely know how to use it well.

While I agree you need aggression to go deep in a tourney, I feel it's misleading to leave it at that. You need a combination of talents/skills to go deep on a regular basis. Off the top of my head you need three things for sure: aggression, patience, and strong observation skills. The patience and observation help you put opponents on hands and that lets you know where to focus your aggression.

Hope I haven't stepped on more toes.

I have no problem with girls playing poker. Being male or female doesn't make you better at this game. Although I must admit whenever I play live against females, I always get the assume that they never bluff and are very tight players.

Yet if you ask me what car someone drives, I am likely to say a Nissan Micra, or a Volkswagen Golf, or a Mercedes SLK. Ask my wife what car somebody drives, and the answer will be a red one, or a green one. So maybe it's more about what people are interested in. It's dangerous to generalise, but in the examples we have used perhaps we could just assume that the women are interested in chairs but men aren't, or the men are interested in cars and the women aren't. Maybe the women are looking at the hair extenisons and the makeup, whereas the men are more interested in certain physical attributes. Ya know?

Hmmm, well I've very little interest in cars. The cars I take notice of are vintage and that's the funny. Generally I would still know who the manufacturer is. I'd be somewhere between you and your wife as I'd say "green Volkswagen, blue Nissan, or black Mercedes". I couldn't begin to tell you which particular car it is with the exception of Beetles and Mustangs. So I'd end up saying something like "it was an old cream Mustang" or "one of those new Beetles in red". I know it hasn't much if anything to do with the thread, I just found it interesting that your wife doesn't notice the difference between Nissans and Volkswagens even though they're strikingly different in design.

Agree on all points. As a general rule of thumb, females tend to be more detail oriented --about things they care about -- if they care to be good at poker (most do) they tend to pick up on tells/reads better than males. (I know I do while playing live - many players ask my advice on an adversary to see If they are on the right track on their reads against their villian.) Not true in all cases, but a valid point. I do believe at the much higher levels of play the reads tend to equal out between males and females - maybe that is just due to the caliber of player or the experience to get to the higher levels of play.

I believe women tend to be more patient as well, so the "timed aggression" seems to be valid. But I will reference these points to experienced females as I still feel the inexperienced males and females just don't seem to read their opponents as well as experienced males and females and even in the higher levels of play, I believe women are still more patient than men as a general rule of thumb.

I'm still looking for an answer to my question: The men who have the opinion that men are better poker players than women - exactly why do feel this way? What are you basing your opinion on?

*btw - love the whole scrotum comment you made earlier - funniest part of this thread by far! :D  :p

I think girls are great poker players. My wife for example goes just as far as I do in the local tournaments we play. The one problem I see with her, and some of the other ladies we play with. Is that they will waste alot of there chips trying to outplay other women in the tournament.

a girl you play against is more dangerous when you are the opinion she cant play poker because of her gender.you will make a mistake faster....

i would like to play against sandra naujoks.... she won last ept event, so she is a good poker player....

and if i would sit beside her i would be very nervous... but the question is, if i will be nervous because of my cards or of her look :embarasse
