Is poker a card game or a money game?

I think poker is a gambling game with chips. And the money is at stake

Hi! Think poker is an interesting game that develops logical thinking, as well a way to have fun. However, when a player begins to grind, poker turns into work. Therefore, it all depends on how much time a player devotes to poker. It can be both work and entertainment.

for me it's not the cards that matter but the way we play them. But it's true that money is a very important factor in poker because the more money it has in the pot and the more decisions will be made. hard to take.

Professional poker players, some of them, are able to make a profit and live off poker. But most recreational players, say 1/2 NL are probably slightly loosing overall. Plus, there is a learning curve, you probably won't be profitable in the first couple of years. Whomever continues playing poker does so because they enjoy the game. I think it has nothing to do with money. Large tournaments with millions in guarantee means being able to play 7-8 hours and more for several days. I don't think you can do that if you don't enjoy the game.

I don't agree with what you say, for me it is more than money, I've learned to better manage my emotions and be a quiet person, so that you can earn money in this game, you must learn to control yourself first place.

I definitely dont think it is a card game. I think it might be a dice game, like backgammon.

NL plays different from limit. And real plays different from play money Betting structure creates a strategy
Tournament play is different strategy too More of a survival to get into the money Rather than an “actual money “ game

I agree, its all about the money. I think everyone started playing poker because they want to win big money. Its either you succeed and become a rich person or fail and made another person rich. Lol.

Not everyone plays for money.

Some enjoy playing for play money. However Money is the driven factor for most to play I believe.

I play poker to enjoy the rush of winning tournaments. I don't play for money, but money comes and it is nice. I play cause, I have 10 buddies who, we like to talk about how many tournaments we win. not so much the money for myself. I am competitive with my buddies. They also don't even play the site I do , they play a lot of live tournaments and even face book sites, but we all compete to see. who gets most wins. The winner gets free drinks for the new year. That's what my buddies and I do. It is enjoyment.

But it seems obvious to me that many successful players sincerely believe that money alone is not a comprehensive motive for playing poker.

i agree with this, and i want to add that playing money-poker is also sort of wasting time because today you are lucky winner but tomorrow you will lose your gains with high probability. from this i can conclude that poker is still a game of cards, but not cash earnings

I think everything is absolutely the opposite. Poker is a card game. Cards are the main tool of poker, money is only the points that measure the achievement of players.

Yeah, it's much more fun to play poker while you have several sources of income and all of them don't consume your time. Years ago I've been playing like a maniac for 10+ hours per day at 8+ tables at a time in order to grow the bankroll, cause poker was a single source of income... Today I'm playing freerolls in the evenings while I'm drawing new 3d models or preparing g-code programs for my CNC machines, and I prefer to withdraw any winnings, even if it's 10 euro or 100 dollars, cause I'd better buy a new stepper motor or few engraving bits and will think about it as a gift sent to me by poker company, instead of having a chance to start risking again at high stakes and feeling that negative or positive TILT, and having a bad feeling that i'm a rake generating mule who actually works for the poker site and falsely believes that he's doing something useful with his life.

There are hundreds of technologies that can be used for a startup, some of them require low investments for a start. Most of the people don't even realize that production line can be started at the table with $100 investments plus knowledge of the technology, larger and more automated types of item production can be started with like $1K investments and some space like a room or a garage. But people prefer to have a job, and spend their free time to watch some SHOW like TV series or sports, and spend $1K to buy a new smartphone so they can feel themselves better, instead of studying, learning new things and investing money and time in a better future.

Such is life. It's not quite obvious for majority that society is split into creators and consumers, and the way of the follower(consumer) is always the easy one. I wonder, what if all online poker sites will post a banner in their software saying "what do you create by playing poker"? Many players, including winning ones are thinking that they're smart, but they almost never ask such questions...

Poker is a complex game that ultimately comes down to money, but it matters a lot as you see it! Do you play for money or for personal pleasure? Regardless of the option you choose, the poker game makes you feel many sensations .. from pleasure .. to anger ... to curiosity and many more ..!

Poker is complex experience. There is emotion from the game itself, there are money involved, there is even social element. Depending on what is most important for you there are different groups of players.

Some just want to play and relax and it is not a problem for them to loose some money. For them poker is like going to a club or restaurant - you give some money and receive some pleasure.

Other only care about money. They play frequently trying to take money from other players and this is all they care about.

For me personally it is combined experience. I like the game for relax after work but i also like to win some cash of course.

Poker is just a game. I like playing poker Its same passion playing sports or video games There was a good response in one of the posts is the chips/cash is how we can objectively score how good player is.
Of course there more luck than skill in poker than say soccer But I guess you have to be skillful in order to be lucky in playing sports as well.

Poker without a game for money is losing all interest.

It is both, card game played for money. As a kid we played for toothpicks to decide a winner. Wasn't the reward of having toothpicks but the glory of winning.

For me it is a card game. Do not forget that there are many people in the world who play poker without real money.

You can play poker as a card game or a money game. Adding value to chips is as easy as putting a set value on them without any actual cash involved. Once money becomes involved it's both because you have to use strategy and thought just like any other card game, or game in general, but you're also using probability, odds etc. to improve your profitability. In my opinion, it's a card game that can make me money
