Is Poker a Good Way to Make Money?

No, it's not. Amateur can win one or two times, but in a long way winner is only professional player. To be prof you need much time ...and money.

No, I don't think it's easy. This is a huge mental effort. Of course, you can hit a small jackpot for luck, but in the long run, luck will not accompany anyone. As for me, poker can become the same job as many other professions. And in this case, poker will not be fun. Well, playing for fun or playing for money is a matter for everyone personally

It's a dream lot's of player's have, but in reality it is extremely hard to become financially independent playing Poker, many professional player's have other forms of income, from real estate to business investment's with friend's and family, even stock's and share's.
I know of one player who flips house's by buying old house's in need of renovation, doing all the work himself, then selling for a profit, so even though he spend's a lot of time playing Poker Tournament's, he also work's hard in his spare time flipping House's.
So before you give up your day job, think abut it seriously, you might find that during a down-swing, you need other income to support you.

If your not a winning player, which most are not, that would mean you would lose 7x as much online per week! That would still make live play more profitable!

This is still true. But yes, I agree, If you aren't capable of consistently making a profit, then no, its clearly not a good way to make money. However, if you have the correct mindset, and correct skill set, then yes, poker has the potential to be a good source of income.
When I'm not running terribly, poker adds sustenance to my monthly paycheck. I play usually 3/4 times a week at live pub games, and that can net me on average an additional £200-£400 per week.

That's quite a hefty income you are getting from Poker! I actually lose a lot but think that's because it's an addiction for me so lose a lot playing when exhausted and keep going and possibly bad game selection but still think got some game. Just hit top 5/152 :joyman:n a satty into $55 which went well and was defo a good result but still need to make some in the target tourney to be profitable. What sort of % field sizes do you play? I think well over 95% of my tourneys are way over a 1,000 entrants and also need to mix it up with smaller fields as think always playing big fields means fewer final tables. What would you say your average buy in is?

I see the £ sign, another UK player ? Not enough of us at the tables nowadays!

Poker can be a good way to make money but there are so many levels of experience needed before considering this, my advise focus on gaining experience and poker character

I do not think so

For me it is not the first income option, but it still needs a lot of study.

I believe money is a good way to make money, however, you must have mental control and know how to deal with game variances!

I use making money as a goal after winning bad beat at casino in dec of 2015 I have been able to use that as my poker money! My goal is to maintain that at level I won hopefully build on it and never go below money I won. So far i have been able to do that! Keeps me focused and more aware and I adjust my game to keep balance up. Very rewarding to me never spent household money to gamble.

I think online poker is luck and not that reliable, live poker depends a lot more on you, your luck and your ability to play.

This is information from a number of years ago, and I'm going from memory:

If you're in the top 5%, the answer to your question is "Yes".

So.....there are 85 million, out of 100 million, that are losing money.

Yes, Poker is a good way to earn money. But it's not an easy way. It takes discipline and strategy as it is also an easy way to lose money. Studying the game, reviewing your hands and learning from your own mistakes and the mistakes of others is essential.

I play to win but its more of killin time for me, I've become a better player but still do it for pass time. I wish I was retired and could see how how much I would win or lose in a month, but ima workn til then. 🍻

Poker is a skill game, and therefore the higher your skill level the better your chance of winning. That being said, making money depends on several factors. The most important factor is what is known as your win rate. That is how many BB/100 hands are you winning for online play and BB/hour for live play. At the lower limits, where the rake is a bigger factor, you need to be winning around 14BB per to be a winning player. As you move up in stakes, that rate can go down a bit. But is normally still going to be around ~10BB per.

The second factor you need to consider is your bankroll, and this is equally as important as your win rate. Some rules of thumb here include things such as not playing stakes or tournament buy in that is above your bankroll. For either online or live that means don't buy in to a single game for more than around 5% of your bankroll. Don't buy into a tournament for more than 10% of your bankroll. These two numbers might be considered high for some. There is guidance that says buying in for around 2% for cash and 5% for tournaments will make your bankroll less susceptible to variance.

The next thing to consider is training and education. Just as with any skill game, those who have put in the work and have the sharpest skills will be the most successful. I could go on here for a while, but there is a great deal of resources for training out there, seek them and put in the work.

Finally, tracking your progress and your hand histories is important. It will allow you the ability to analyze your game, plug leaks, and make improvements when needed. Online is pretty easy with most sites offering hand history libraries and the ability to use HUDs. Live, you can get any number of Apps that will provide the ability to take notes after a hand. This is sometimes difficult, and takes some practice. I suggest carrying a notepad and pen and learn some poker shorthand to take notes during and after play. During play note the board cards and the action of all players involved. When the hand is finished you can note all known hold cards.
