A large number of chess players start playing poker sooner or later.
Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Alexander Grischuk, Petr Svidler and a lot of other top chess players showed interest in poker.
Some chess players succesed in poker, but top poker players didn't succesed in chess.
Do you think there is something similar between these games?

What is similar between these two games is the strategy. To win you need good strategies, but if in poker luck is also essential, in chess it's a matter of intelligence and a well-defined strategy to become a winner.

Well, they both require strategy and calculation. Being able to read people might help in chess, but isn’t as critical.

I think there are similarities in terms of the analytical thinking that you have to have to make plays and disarm your opponent, the time to do it and the strategy is very fundamental in both games. The only thing that I see differently is that in chess luck does not influence in the way that it does in poker, in chess the intelligence of the opponent influences more, in poker, no matter how intelligent you are, if you are unlucky you do not advance in no way during a game. Analytical thinking and good decision making is common in both Chess and Poker. However Chess is a game of imperfect information whereas Chess is a complex mathematical problem.

I think in chess people won't get bad beat and therefore won't get tilt, emotion factor is more influenced in poker, but in both games players need perseverance.

Hi Bro! Another question, I sometimes think what is best for my brain? Chess, poker, sudoku? - the answer all together is an interactive training for the brain. If I get tired of playing poker, I get tired of playing Sudoku or chess. As they say, water sharpens a stone. No, in terms of games there is little to nothing that transfers from chess to poker.

A lot of poker players fancy themselves as deep thinkers and they like a challenge and a gamble. That is all.

No different than poker players liking golf or shooting pool.

no. both games are very different because chess is 100% skill so the best player will always win or at least draw unlike poker which the best players can lose many tournaments when they are unlucky. also chess is always heads up, so you can only compare chess with a heads up tournament or cash game but like i said before luck plays a big role in poker and none in chess so i dont find lots of similarities between both games. the only thing in common is that you have to make constant decisions and beat the opponent, also there are lots of strategy in both games as well but they are very different.

Chess is a bloodsport, I've never witnessed so much hatred and spite in a single game. That's what you get when your very core, your ego, is directly attacked from all sides. Can't blame your defeat on luck, or on variance, NO!, it was you dipshit yourself who's at fault for losing this game!
Poker seems very tame in comparison.

I think there are similarities, depends on the measured parameters. Speaking for myself, I know the game of chess well, played it a lot. I’m at best, a rookie against great players, No pun intended. We could play till the cows come home, I will not win 1 match against grand masters. Given enough lifetimes, I might be able to figure out and get a stalemate.

I’m at the same “rookie” level in holdem against the master poker players, yet I’m confident with some luck that I could win the odd match heads up,

What I draw from the above is, at a certain point, the master chess player removes luck from existing in chess. So experience can remove the element of chance in chess, however no amount of experience can completely remove the element of chance in poker.
So they might have similarities from the observer point of view, but at the same time, can be viewed as having none at all.

There are similarities but poker differ by the fact there's a huge algorithm that we call it random scenario at the beginning of each hand which in chess there's only actions based on player moves

You learn the work ethic and appreciation for study and improvement in chess. Then come to poker because there is more money available.

Both are games of decision making and anticipating your opponents moves. I think thats where the similarities end. Chess is always HU. Also no bad beats in chess… just an unanticipated move by your opponents. In chess each play builds on the previous. In poker the hand ends and new cards are dealt.
