Is poker an intellectual game?

Poker is absolutely a game of intellect. Using key strategic concepts is necessary to succeed. Must be capable of learning the many nuances of the game. Math is a key element where statistics and probability are utilized often. Disciplined players are always studying the game to improve.

I think that this is a easy question for me. I agree that is a intellectual game. A perfect example to test my theory, is that when the level of THC in my blood Rises my performance declines. That's all I need to know to think is an intellectual game

I do think it is an intelectual game,you need to learn,the odds,the combos,the outs,and you need to study to have a good strategy,so yes,you need to think a lot.

I think more intellectual game. As soon as I stop thinking, I lose. Therefore, I play only at one table, carefully watching the cards. To win you have to think!

when i go to the local casino an play poker i dont see any intellectuals sitting there...i usually see swine who are full of themselves. vicious cruel bragging lunkheads. you couldn't find a thinking man at the game. i dont think you know what an intellectual is.:frown:

Each game need intellect, chess or poker or baseball. Each game need psychology knowledges also. On my mind, poker more psychology game than intellectual.

Chess is a game of information - at any point you have seen every move your opponent has made and could make next, everything is on the board in front of you.
Poker is a game of misinformation - you only know what your opponent was doing if the hand goes to showdown. You have to combine mathematics (pot odds, draw odds etc) with hand/people reading skills to work out the most profitable (or least unprofitable) play.

Naturally, each game is different, but people think that the game is difficult as chess, because to become a professional in chess you need to learn for a long time that poker is also similar. I would compare poker to chess composition because there are no such situations in chess.

I can't say that poker is 100 percent intellectual game, just in some cases I think that there is an intellect in playing cash tables and good expensive tournaments and there you need to think about situations and solve them, but I don't think intellectual games when tournaments play almost on luck and there is no need at all to decide and accept and count, and in such games only luck passes!

I think he has a little bit of everything, a bit of skill, a bit of luck, I've seen players reach final tables with only luck, winning hands that should be lost, then you realize that it is not an intellectual game.

Yes it is an intellectual game

I think poker is an intellectual game and I guess no one could say something different. I think poker is a sport and we need to develope different kinds of skill to improve our game, be better and reach new poker levels.

Poker is an intellectual game because we have to think to much, study and practice every day, only if we want to be winners in this game. Of course you can only play for fun and believe that this is only a game and you don't need to practice or think about it but if you want to live from this and be a good poker player you need to study, practice and think every day in every sesion.

I think a comparison between any of those kinds of games is wrong - poker is something different. You have the strategy element of chess while retaining an element of luck: in fact, poker is all about your ability to strategise around your "luck". Not only that, it's more social, against more people, and what you stand to lose at any one time is usually greater than any one of those games. This isn't to say that poker is "better", everybody has their preferences, but I definitely don't think it's fair to try to compare poker to chess or any other game like it.

Poker is an intellectual game that requires experience and skill of the player. In my opinion, the ratio of skill and good luck is 75/25 percent. If you think that in poker, you only need to guess which hand you play or not, then it becomes obvious that you are a novice without experience and with regular losses.

Poker is a game of skill and strategy. It's not a game you can just start playing and be a winning player right off the bat. You need to learn and keep learning about the game. The game is always evolving and changing. To get better you need to practice have patience and discipline to win. You need to develop your reading people skills and many other skills to be a winning player or you will just be a losing player like most are.

I my opinion, poker is still more complex, the deal with imperfect informations and the luck factor conflicting with the odds, make the poker unique. In addition, if I'm right, there's no bluff on the above games, ain't it. :deal:

Of course poker is an intellectual game. And if at the era of creation it was considered solely as a game of chance, today in order to win poker you need to have knowledge - you need to be able to count, understand probability theory, statistics, and be psychologically stable. Poker is generally hard work, but very enjoyable.

I am a long time amateur Go player. Go is an Asian board game which is definitely an "intellectual" game. For very long time I did not pay attention to poker at all, but only three months ago when I started playing poker I found it's extremely fun, as it seemed to challenge my ability to handle different situations, such as good and bad luck... I say it's an intellectual game because even though it just doesn't involve so much calculation and logical reasoning, it requires large amount of integrated intellectual capacity.

To me, poker resemble life, which requires multiple abilities, not only strategy plot such as chess or go.

Actually there's much more to the game than most will even realize until they've played for a long time and at a higher level. I'm wondering what games & stakes do you play that you are basing your thoughts on? ie. for someone playing in Cardschat freerolls, some micro mtt's online, maybe some hyper spins... it's going to seem like there's really not much to the game (but even there, there are many subtleties.

When you're talking about some of the elite players, they are THINKING on a much higher level. (there are also 'levels' of thinking when it comes to poker and when a player is only thinking on level 1 or level 2 type of thinking, they won't even be able to understand or relate to what that higher level of thinking even is)
