General between poker and lottery is that the cards in poker like a lottery ticket, even smaller! The lottery is manipulating balls with number (tickets)! Poker is a whole other level requires skill to read cards, players, positions and so on! This is my opinion, just seeing!

I like poker and lottery as well. Not very sure you can call poker a lottery but a lot of people think that because they sometimes don't really understand the rules of the game

Sometimes it feels like lottery, but after playing many hands you will see, that the variance is weak against long term history. ;)

is poker like the lottery

To call poker the lotteries is not quite true.Poker is primarily a game with strategic thinking mathematical expectation luck and just the will of the cards. It's like building a pyramid for a long time and one wrong hand can destroy everything.

I already mentioned elsewhere. I find if you raise pre flop and isolate to only one opponent, if you miss the flop, it is most likely the opponent has hit. I've got a long history now of exactly that. I only play online. I will get shouted down I know but I have good reason to not trust software.

Poker is not a lottery at all ... people who have studied and read ... know well that it takes many skills to succeed in poker ... and we all know that all hands will always have a percentage of chance of lose ... and we call that variance ...!
And if you have a strong hand ... there are ways to avoid losing a hand on the river ... and one of them is to play aggressively so that your opponent does not resist and has to fold ...!

Hi everyone.

Rookie opinion: the lottery, roulette, lotto, pool, etc. they are games in which chance is basically the most important and only the organizing company always wins from start to finish, while only a lucky player "catches" something once in a while. Statistically and mathematically, these games are designed so that the player always loses in the long run.
I give you an example: many years ago at the Monte Carlo casino there was a player at a roulette table who was making enough money, so one of the supervisors called the manager and asked if he took it out.
The manager asked: "the player is standing or sitting"? , "sitting" the employee replied. Ok, then offer him free drinks and let him play.
Poker may initially seem like a game of chance in the short term (and for beginners like me sometimes it seems) but in reality it is a game that has a learning curve that is concatenated with the winnings, and chance, in the As time passes, it will be less important. On the other hand, the company that organizes earns money, of course, its logical commission (rake), but it is not the only one that wins (good players do it too).

Best regards from Buenos Aires.

That also makes the beauty of Poker. Hopefully you don't necessarily win with the best hand, that'd be so damn boring otherwise.

For someone who plays once in every 2 or 3 months it is exactly like lottery I think.
And it's very possible for him to sit at a cash table and win big or even win a tournament without knowing much or anything at all about the concepts that we discuss in a site like Cardschat.

It's a known thing that in short term it can be like a lottery where you can win once in a thousand years but in long term... it can still be like lottery where you win once in a thousand years xD (if you know what I mean).

So for me no, poker has nothing to do with lottery unless you see it like that.
There are many things to learn here and much work to be done, and after these you can see results changing into your favor. Seems like something that you can learn, exercise and improve.
Can you improve in lottery? xD

It's odd that people make separation between lottery and luck, since lottery is purely based on luck.

When a person plays a fast tournament where blinds and antes go up with blazing speed, and you are in danger to be eaten by blinds, pressure to act and make less than optimal decisions makes it more and more like lottery.

In general I would say no although there is luck involved but you need skill, discipline and experience to have sustained success.

Those large fields mtts are kinda like a lottery. You need boatloads of luck to navigate through them and you can get an insane score if you win. You do not necessarily need to be a good player to win one of those just loads of luck on that one run.

Hi mate. That comparison between poker and lottery is a bad joke. When you play poker you need skills to be successful while in lottery just luck.If you are ahead in a hand till the turn, but there is a small percent you could lose,so it may happen..

I can understand how it feels like that sometimes. I would never compare the 2 though you have complete and utter luck vs skill+ Luck. At some point over a large sample size the skill will rise to the top over the luck.

It's not a lottery, but very often it is only luck happens to you in that I flop 9 and he and the driver full 10 to May put 1:10 and he is close .... so to say that it is 90% and 10% lottery knowledge, intuition, etc ....

In my mind, I am going to win every hand every time or at least until the cards are dealt. In cash games about 20%not the time. On line about 5% because I do not trust on line poker. Only play for fun.
