There are some hard ceilings on how much money can be made. you can only play so much at a high level and there are only so many games available.

Yes I see I'm improving but at least I made like a 1000 dollars last year of profit and my goal this year is 5000. I'm already 1000 dollars positive this year so far...

Poker definitely can make money. It can also loose it.
Online & live tournament, positive.
Online & live cash game, negative.

Actually, it's very simple to understand...

Most part of the players never studied anything about the game.

And this makes everything easier for who keep learning more about it.

Because your profits (in long term, of course) comes from the mistakes your opponents did (-EV decisions, for example) and the losses comes from the mistakes you did against your opponents...

Everything will reflect in your future, no matter what you do...

Very difficult due to variance. Cash game especially difficult to get ahead in. I would not try and make a living out of it, put it that way.

I don't think many people are winning. Poker is like going down once.

It can, of course, but where there may be a profit, there may also be losses. There's a secret that doesn't apply to freerolls.

I just started playing poker and lost $80, so I only play free games now, but when I won a little money on free games, I lost money soon after participating in other games.
What types of games do you play (and level too) and what is your daily schedule?

If you are ready to learn and develop - you can. But not everyone knows how to play with a cold mind, understand what can be done and what cannot. To earn a good income, you must have discipline and a lot of free time to spend.

There seems to be some different opinions on how many are winning players ranking from 5-20%
The vast majority of players have never studied the game even the slightest. Perhaps 5% studies poker. They will likely be winning players or break even. Most winning players don’t win much since they have a proper BRM and won’t play beyond their means.
When we talk poker on CardsChat we must acknowledge that most of our opponents just play some variant of happy go lucky. This can be frustrating for winning players short term. Long term the non thinking players donate money to winning players who play for the long run. But we must realize that the long run can be longer than we may think. This is especially true in tournaments.

I think playing poker is a good hobby. To make money from poker for a living, you have to dedicate all your time to it, it is not the easiest way to make money.

I make a profit mainly by just freerolling. Its hard to lose that way but I don't make much these days because of belt tightening by the poker rooms. Every once in awhile I get an offer that i cant refuse and do some actual gambling but that sure doesn't happen very often these days.

Poker brings me an income. On average, I make $100 a month. I think if I put more effort into it, I could quite possibly have $200-$300, but unfortunately I don't have that much free time.

That's a good way of looking at it. Any move that you make with a better EV than your opponent is the correct move. Except for in certain tournament situations.

Yes, poker can make money, but it depends on skill, discipline, bankroll management, and understanding of the game. While luck plays a role in the short term, consistent winners rely on strategy, experience, and emotional control. Many professional players make a living from poker, especially in online games, live cash games, and tournaments. However, most casual players either break even or lose over time. To make money in poker, you need to study, track your results, play within your limits, and constantly improve. It's not easy, but for some, it's a profitable pursuit.
