Rounders is available in 10 minutes segments via YouTube.

Great Flick.

There was also some ESPN produced mini-series called Tilt. It stared Michael Madson and Eddie Cibrian. It was okay, IIRC, but I watch mostly because I knew Eddie.

++1 How could I forget Maverick?! The one with Mel Gibson of course, and then there's a New Maverick pilot floating around starring James Garner.

Also, the movie Doc, about Doc Holliday.

Drew Barrymore didn't bother me, what bothered me was the Bana character's total lack of bankroll management, his stealing and blowing his girlfriend's money, and his throwing the wsop final table. Plus the idea that Barrymore would get back together with an idiot like that.

Here is a really good Documentary about Mike Picow, who made the Final Table of the 1989 WSOP Main Event and finished in 8th place for $30,200 (note: Phil Hellmuth won that year as youngest player to ever win at the time, while stopping Johnny Chans' bid to win his 3rd title in a row).

The 1989 WSOP was the pinnacle of Mike Picow’s poker-playing career. He made two other final tables in addition to finishing eighth in the Main Event, cashing for over $65,000. Like so many unfortunate souls, though, Picow succumbed to Las Vegas’ dark side. In 2008, his daughter Natalie made a documentary called Strike Dice!: Betting on My Father. In the film she travels to Las Vegas and finds her father bedraggled, bearded, and living on the streets, his life ravaged by a gambling addiction. Picow’s last recorded tournament cash was a 12th-place finish in an ace-to-five lowball event at the 1995 WSOP.

...so you didn't like the parts that were real then?

Poker (especially live poker) is full of brokes and degenerates like Bana's character with no bankroll management who beg, borrow and sometimes even steal the money they play with. It's supposed to bother you.

Throwing the final table was maybe the director taking a bit of artistic license but the rest of it is standard in the real world.

That's fine, I can handle reality. Just don't try to turn reality into a romantic comedy. I didn't get the impression that the character had really changed or learned anything, so all his relationships are probably doomed to failure. Rounders at least showed this more realistically I think.

I didn't know there were any other Maverick movies.. the one with Mel Gibson is the only one that I know.

Can anyone post a CC review on Casino Jack? Does the movie contain a lot of poker playing? I didn't bother to read any reviews because I know whether to watch it based on what others tell me on this thread

RoundersI must admit, I was among the many who was introduced to the world of no-limit Texas Hold'em through this 1998 movie starring Matt Damon and Ed Norton. There's still no other movie that's about modern-day poker like this one, and the marathon poker session that Damon's character goes through to help save Norton's "the worm" is great. With a cameo by Johnny Chan and some great (though sometimes over-quoted) lines, this is a must-see.

Sorry, Rounders did what?

Guy thinks he's fantastic just because he bluffed Johnny Chan one time, exercises terrible BRM, goes broke, gets money back by exercising terrible BRM and exploiting the world's most idiotic "tell", then goes off to World Series with a smile on his face to exercise further terrible BRM.

Yep, he learned heaps in that movie

Actually, I wasn't trying to comment on the quality of poker in either movie. Nobody wants to watch a guy with good BRM grind through tens of thousands of hands to make a small but steady ROI. But given the character flaws of both "Heros", I found it more realistic that the guy loses the girl and his "best friend" runs out on him rather than he gets the girl and makes up with his father. Of course, if the Drew Barrymore character had pressed charges against the guy for theft and the load shark thugs had broken his kneecap, that wouldn't have made for a very lighthearted rom-com, but maybe some things just weren't meant to go together.

Woah when you mentioned Rounders 2, I didn't know there was a sequel so I went to imdb. It's set to come out in 2012!!

What was that mini-series on ESPN called? It had "El Matador...luring young bulls into the ring just to...cut...them...down." It was cheesy, I might have been the only person that watched it.

I saw Rounders on Youtube while at work (don't own the movie and didn't feel like renting it). The quality is great and load times aren't long at all. If you're like me - hate your job and get paid to do nothing - then I definitely recommend you load this up.

Just watched Casino Royale last night.. I'd call that a poker movie. At least the majority of the plot had poker involved.... it was good.. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't really know, but 5 card stud is quite an old game with a tonne of information.

Players are deal only 1 hole card (face down card) and the other 4 cards are dealt face up to each player, making bluffing quite a bit harder.

Fun game, but a bit dry without implementing the 4 to a straight, 4 to a flush rule (basically 4 to a straight beats a pair, 4 to a flush beats 4 to a straight, and then 2 pair beats 4 to a flush).

Wow, that's "tripped out" as I used to say. Is there anywhere online that you can play that format with or without the special 4str8/4flush rule?
