As luck is involved i know ,but i must say that even with a big stack of chips in the final table the amateur can never beat a skillful pro, other gambling platforms like slots and roulette is completely gambling because no skill involved

Poker is 60% skill ,40% gambling - I am sure you can argue these statistics, but if you assumed this, then there is a lot of gambling involved.

However, if you have a tight bankroll management, and don't risk all your $ each game, and say only risk 1% of your bankroll per game, it's hard to lose if you are a really great player.

If you can stay disciplined with your bankroll management, and you play great, the "gambling" factor goes away in the long run and for you, it's just cashing in free money.

However, with that said, less than 10% of online players actually profit from poker, so it's "gambling" for the majority of the people.

routlette and slots are not gambling since their is no risk you are guaranteed to lose your shirt the longer you play. MTT poker is mostly luck and amateurs often do beat "pros" at the final table. Though cash game is a skill structure as long as you play enough hands.

completely disagree with you.
if luck is involved, it is a game of chance.
and I think a rookie can beat a pro at a table,
Now I do agree that a professional is more likely to beat novices and win a tournament easier than a beginner

It should be considered gambling but perhaps you mean more people should know or don't know the skill required compared to other forms of gambling.

It should be more like 80% skill 20% luck imo. It looks like you like to have fun playing poker.:elefant:

if an amateur made it to the final table with a big stack of chips they are doing something right and do stand a chance.

Wanna know about hypocrisy? In German jurisdiction it depends. If it is about licensing it's gambling and the state has a monopoly on gambling, which means only regulated casinos are allowed to offer poker - both, cash games and tournaments. "Well hurray" thought the pros, because gains from gambling and lottery winnings are tax free in Germany.

But just like DaNeg the government thought "F the Pros." So they send out tax filings to Eddy (Eduard) Scharf, Lufthansa pilot and two times bracelet winner (2001, 2003). So he went to court, lost in the first and at the end in the highest fiscal court. I saw an interview with him, where he said the verdict says it's a game of skill and he has an edge *drumroll* even in coin flips.

I believe that when you incorporate money into a game of chance, like poker, you step into the area of gambling.

I believe that the US is working it's way toward legalizing poker especially, but most forms of gambling. Sports betting and OTB are essentially legal. The argument can definitely be made that poker is a game of skill with elements of chance. Similar to backgammon. There was an interesting case a few years ago involving and backgammon tournament in Oregon. Eventually by demonstrating the true odds vs math of backgammon, the defendant was able to prove that if Player A makes the mathematically #1 decision every roll, and Player B makes the mathematically #2 decision every roll; the chance element of the roll itself is completely negated over a certain period of time (less than the length of a standard game).

The case was State of Oregon v. Barr, you can find a nice writeup in the backgammon times -Sorry, it wont let me post the url here :(

By definition of the word, poker is gambling. In that so would the stock market. Even with skill, it would be gambling. There a risk regardless how you look at it. Still have to wonder how people can associate a percentage to skill and luck? Not what the OP ask, see it a lot posted but no one can provide how they arrived to that answer. Maybe next time provide a formula?

I believe that any game for money is gambling, whether poker or roulette, or even something else.

So, you're calling governments and lawyer hypocrits:eek:.
They are not hypocrits, but they apply a basic rule:
- poker has two aspects a) skill and b) luck: select the one that makes most money/is better for your carreer.
The high court just confirmed that the whole line below him made the right decision.

I live in The Netherlands where the government uses option 3 (luckily not for me:D):
- when the winning from poker become substantial: check if it can be classified as work, as income tax becomes higher than gambling tax if the winnings are enough.

And they use option 4:
online poker is illegal, so you pay tax on 100% of monthly winnings, rather than have a 500euro free of tax like in the state-run casinos.

How about marriage? Talk about a gamble!!! Men may think they know the rules of the game, but women have unwritten rules which trump us every time...we lose always...AK vs. 44...it's like marrying your high school sweetheart!

Marriage
Incorporating
Investing
Taking any job
and on and on...

In my country poker is defined as sports game with elements of gambling. It is under same regulations as other forms of gambling. For me poker can and should be played as game of skill but many people play it as pure gambling.

poker needs good skills in tournaments and cash games, but I think that all slots and card games are excitement for players who want to win, but maybe I'm wrong in some opinions, but for me it is!
