In my opinion, it’s still worth starting to play poker in 2026. The game has become more difficult, especially online, but there are also many more tools and learning resources available today.

I believe so, it's very competitive, but on the other hand there's a lot of information to evolve!

I think poker is still worth starting in 2026, but the expectations need to be realistic. The game is definitely tougher than it was during the early poker boom when a lot of inexperienced players were entering the games. Today there is much more strategy content available, solvers, training sites, and overall knowledge in the player pool.
That said, poker is still a skill game and the ecosystem is far from dead. Online traffic and tournament guarantees are still strong, and many major tournaments continue to attract large fields and prize pools.
The main difference today is that success requires more study and discipline. Players who treat poker seriously—learning fundamentals, managing bankroll, and constantly improving—can still find profitable spots. The edge may be smaller than before, but it still exists.
I also think accessibility is actually better than ever. With mobile apps and online platforms, it’s easier for new players to start playing and learning the game than it was years ago.
So in my opinion, poker is still worth starting if you enjoy the game and are willing to study and be patient. It may not be the easy money it once was, but for people who like strategy, competition, and long-term improvement, it can still be a very rewarding game.

Yes, but with realistic expectations.
Poker is definitely tougher than it used to be, especially online.
There’s a lot more strategy content, solvers, and experienced players now, so the easy money isn’t what it was 10–15 years ago.
But that doesn’t mean new players can’t succeed.

I think poker is still worth starting in 2026, but with realistic expectations. The games are definitely tougher than they used to be because there’s so much strategy content and many players study the game seriously now.
However, poker is still a skill game, and new players can improve a lot if they are willing to learn fundamentals, manage their bankroll, and stay disciplined. Live games and low-stakes online games can still be good environments to start.
So I would say yes, it’s still worth learning poker — just treat it as a long-term skill and not a quick way to make money.

Hi guys, With games getting tougher and so much strategy content out there now, I’m wondering — is poker still worth starting today?

Online seems more competitive than ever, but live games and big tournaments are still growing.

If someone completely new asked you, “Should I start learning poker seriously in 2026?” — what would you say?

Yes or no? And why?
I would ask them what they want-out of the game 1st and then answer there question. If they wanted to play for the enjoyment of the game I would say yes right away. If to ask the living i would 1st tell them all the issues with that before telling them is OK to try.

The one thing i would tell them, Poker is not an easy game. anyone can win a hand but winning long term is a much different story.

In my opinion, it is also worth starting poker in 2026, but the mindset matters a lot. The game is definitely harder than it used to be because there is so much more strategy content available and players are more prepared. The era of “easy money” is practically over.

However, if someone enjoys the game and is willing to learn and improve over time, poker can still be very rewarding. In my case, I currently play less due to lack of time, so I'm more focused on staying active in the community and learning. When I have more time again, this knowledge and experience will help me develop faster.

Been on CardsChat for 13 years and I've seen the "poker is dead" thread a dozen times. Short answer: Yes, but forget about easy money.

Like @finaltable1 said, everyone has preflop charts now and thinks they are a walking solver. But their post-flop GTO application is usually garbage. The highest +EV approach for a beginner in 2026 isn't trying to play perfectly balanced—it's learning baseline theory to crush the pool's massive leaks with a pure exploitative strategy.

Also, as @WrongUsername pointed out, microstakes rake will eat you alive. If you aren't game selecting aggressively and bumhunting, you won't survive the ecosystem.

TL;DR: Grinding a living online from scratch today is a brutal climb. But hitting the live tables or treating it as a serious side hustle to exploit recs? Absolutely still worth it

I think it depends on where you live and your ability.

Its really hard to find enough volume in some jurisdictions.

low limit cash games in casinos where i live are almost unbeatable due to the ridiculous rake . move up 1 or 2 levels and a beginner has almost no chance because of the higher skill level . online ring/cash games are generally tough at any stakes . the last hope is found in freerolls and small buyin multi table tournaments . good luck if you're just starting !

Yes, but you need to study a lot, otherwise you won’t have so much EV.

I started playing poker again about a year ago, after several years of absence. You should ask yourself the answers to several questions. For example, do you like playing poker? What do you expect from poker, what do you want to achieve? How persistent and patient are you? If you have answered all of these questions for yourself and if the answer to the first question is yes, I advise you to start.

I would say yes, poker continues to grow more and more, and as a result the level of difficulty gets higher. I also believe that for people who live in countries where the dollar currency has a high value, it is worth starting to play poker in 2026, especially on online platforms.
