What was the biggest change that poker brought to your life?

Hello, everyone!

Those days I was thinking about something.

A lot of people enter poker thinking only of winning money. I myself started with that goal. But looking back, I realize that poker ended up teaching me much more than just playing cards.

I learned that not always making the right decision means winning that hand.

I learned to be more patient, to better control anxiety, and to understand that results don't appear overnight.

I still have a lot to learn, but today I realize that several things I developed at the tables also make a difference in life outside them.

What was the biggest change that poker brought to your life?

Was it discipline, emotional control, new friendships, extra income... or something else they didn't even imagine when they started playing?

For me, it was learning to accept that you can make the right decision and still get a bad result. That mindset has helped me outside of poker too. It's made me more patient, less emotional, and more focused on making good decisions instead of worrying about things I can't control.

What really changed was my relationship with money, especially regarding personal purchases, leisure, hobbies, and personal items. Since before I started playing poker, I’ve made it a habit to check prices, do some research, and look for the best value for money; this shift helps me save a significant amount of money to this day.

I think the greatest skill I acquired from poker was a better understanding of how the statistical world works and using that to my advantage in life. Also, I think it's fair to say that bluffing taught me a thing or two in terms of communication, but I don't think I can express that in words as I would like.

The biggest change poker brought in my case is bankroll management as this concept was unfortunately not a priority when I was younger (such a good feeling when your parents/family take care pretty much of everything and you can just do anything

); for example I've learned how to separate my funds for different living expenses, never spend more than I can afford (similar to poker - only play at stakes/buy-ins you can afford to lose), have discipline and track my spendings... to be honest, I've learned many other things from poker, still IMO the bankroll part continues to be underestimated by the majority of the players and it's something that should be a priority to fix/improve as soon as possible...

It taught me to focus on making the best decision with the information I have, rather than judging myself by the outcome.
That mindset carries over into everyday life whether it's work or personal decisions.
Poker also showed me the value of continuous learning, reviewing mistakes objectively, and staying emotionally disciplined instead of reacting to short term results.

When I was living off of this, I cancelled so many live events with my friends because of poker that my circle of friends slowly eroded.

I personally learned how to improve my decision making process. In poker and in life you have to make decisions all the time- what school to go to, what career to choose, which people are your friends. In poker you have to choose what hands you raise or call with and how you play a certain hand depending on your table image.

For me, the biggest change has been my mindset.

Poker taught me that I can't control the outcome, but I can control the quality of my decisions. It also made me much more disciplined with money management, more patient, and better at accepting short-term setbacks while staying focused on long-term improvement.

I've been playing online for over 20 years, from micro stakes cash games to MTTs, and poker has taught me to separate good decisions from good outcomes. You can make the right play and still lose, or make a terrible play and get rewarded. That lesson carries over into everyday life more than most people realize.
