When you first started playing poker, what was your biggest belief that you later discovered to be wrong?

“Does AA always win?”

What was yours?

It's a funny thing, I thought so too, and then little by little I discovered that not in every play you win you win with AA.

I thought a pro is going to win basically all the time, like 99 percent of the games he is playing.

The biggest lie I ever believed about poker was that if I studied hard enough, watched every training video and dedicated all my free time to the game, I could eventually become a professional player and make a great living from it. I thought poker would be my escape from the typical 9 to 5 job. While skill and hard work definitely matter, I underestimated how tough, competitive and mentally demanding professional poker really is. The reality is that even great players face huge swings and uncertainty. I still enjoy poker, but I no longer see it as a guaranteed path to financial freedom.

At first I didn't know the rules of the game well and for me the best hand was the color of the ace.

If you lose, it's because you had bad luck.
What matters is analyzing whether you made the right decisions, regardless of the result.

At first, I thought poker was just a way to relax and play cards with friends. Then I discovered that there was the wsop and many other tournaments, and I was blown away. After that, I learned that you could play online too, so I signed up 11 years ago — and I’m still playing to this day.

That if you were good you would be favourite to win most of the time. Luck plays a bigger factor than I would have expected before I played the game a lot.

Being the leader in chips even with 30 people left doesn't mean you're going to get paid or win.
another one of my curses , by this I mean that you only need to make a few mistakes to fall apart

When I started playing poker, I thought it was a game of chance, luckily, some time later I discovered that you can improve and play better, when I started attending classes at intellipoker with Rubén White, and Fede Ztern, there I learned that by studying, having bank control and adding volume to tournaments you can earn money.

For me, the biggest wrong belief was thinking poker is mostly about getting good cards.
I used to believe premium hands alone would make me a winning player.
Over time, I realized poker is much more about position, decision-making, discipline, and exploiting opponents' mistakes.
I also learned that good decisions can still lose in the short term because of variance.
That shift in mindset completely changed the way I approach the game. ♠️

The biggest lie is that if you put in the work it will pay off. I think, in general, poker keeps you humble. You can study as much as you want as work as much as you can to get better. There is an element of luck that you just have no control over. If you don't win your flips in key spots you just will not be a profitable player.

Mine was thinking that if I made the right play, I should win the hand. 😄 It took me a while to accept that you can make the correct decision and still lose because of variance. Once I understood that, poker became a lot less frustrating.
