Variance is the reason I'm still playing after 5 busto sessions this week lol.

Last night: 2,094 player freeroll, 5 KOs, lasted 2h 21m, finished 40th for $0.71. Top 2% of the field.

Then spun that $0.71 into $1.21 in a $0.25 Spin.

Variance gave me 2 wins, but my bankroll is still $48.79 short of proper BRM for Spin $0.25.

Variance doesn't care about your feelings. BRM does.

The topic is beautifully covered; I agree with every word! Personally, it took me over three years to finally come to terms with variance as a phenomenon. And once I accepted it, I completely stopped playing poker for money, as I simply don't have the resources to play enough tournaments/hands to have positive hopes and prospects. So, only freerolls, where variance and I have a completely free relationship—neither it owes me anything, nor do I owe it anything.

Variance can drive you bonkers but it is also not a bad thing. You aces get it all in vs 62o and you lose to a flush. Everyone remember that moment in time but forget 82% of the time that player was trying to pay you off for a win. Many players also forget that they are sometime on the other side of it. While it does make me made when it happens i am more happy they player in my best interest.

We like it and hate it at the same time. We don’t want to leave things up to luck, we’d rather play hands in a more standard way instead of everything coming down to flips. But a lot of the time there’s no choice, we get forced into all-ins and have to go with it. That’s poker, either you have it or your opponent does. And if we’re consistent, in the long run things should go our way.
