The more people in the hand the more likely to get busted

When you start out in a donk fest (defined as a huge freeroll or a sub $1.10 buy in), you will lose if you play in hands where 6-10 people see the flop even if you have JJ. Point being - you have to observe the table and get the inteligent people to fold. If everyone is a moron at your table (quite unlikely) then it's probably best to not play until they eliminate themselves (or play a rebuy and take some huge risks prepared to throw down some rebuy money). I mean fold the jacks preflop as crazy as it seams in some situations.

Once you have a read on your table, If you have watched a few hands and there are 2-3 calling stations at your table you may have to push all in to get the rational players (those who want to make it deap into the tourney) to fold.

The better you learn to read players the easier this gets. Another reason most players prefer live games.

If you were at a tight table where 4 people have gone all in before you and you know they have been playing nothing except face cards would you consider calling with 7 4 having a pretty good idea that 8 face cards out of the 16 are in those four hands. Depend on my stack size I very well may consider it figuring that I would have a better chance of hitting mine than them hitting theirs.

But you are correct. I don't know why people will bet any suited cards whether they are connected or not.

Maybe these people have just finished reading about double belly busters and decided to start giving them a try in the freerolls. Freerolls are a great place to practice new techniques.

We have a friend who we play live tournaments with and she LOVES playing 7 4 suited.
We call it the LINDA.
The unfortunate thing for her is that she lives and dies with the hand---she just can't dump it. WE know if there's a 4 or 7 on the board and she's betting--you better have an OVER pair or two.
Go LINDA.

Same thing at my home game. Except the guy calls it "Big Brother" (a slight knock off of Big Slick, when he was learning the game and couldn't remember the names of hands).

What makes me mad is when people who play the 7 4 (or whatever crap hand they choose to play) respond with, "Well I thought you were bluffing." Well, so what if I was... you still don't have the hand to call!

I agree with what has been stated, you have to observe who those people are and stay away from them. Or only go at them when their stack size is smaller than yours so you risk your tournament life over something that lame. But I still hate it.

Sorry but the best answer you get if you ask them why they called is "why not"

OK, Where would you like me to start.....

LOL! Exactly. That's what's rough about poker... being a 90% favorite and having to listen to some idiot spout off his mouth 10% of the time. Maybe I should start playing ring games. Does that make it any easier?

Probably since you lost a big hand against garbage, you seem to remember seeing the same hand in AI pots more frequently...just catching your eye and reminding you of that hand, I'm guessing.

Calling with 7/4 suited is not that all a weak play. You are small stack and everyone folds to you on the button. You go all in with it. Its the right move.
You are the Big stack in SB with 7/4 suited BB is very small stack and sure to go all in with anything you must raise him all in when everyone folds to the blinds. What are you 60/40 against a random hand?
Two tournaments I won because I did this.
A/Q small stack against my BS was beaten by my pair of 7/7 after the flop. He was the bubble.
7/4 suited when I was small stack and on the button and made a move against the blinds and was met with KK. Won with a flush. I'd do the same thing with 10/10 or J/J or A/Q. What am I going to do wait around for it? My small stack couldnt take it. You have to make a move when you have position or fold equity.
Pokers logic is more complex than waiting and calling with hands. You dont play hands if you want to win big time you play people and situations. You must beat 99% of the field to get into the top 3. You are going to have to take chances. Give me 7/4 suited instead of A/Ko against AA anytime.

Good points! I was playing in a tourney and I noticed that when I was SB and I raised, the BB almost always folded. So I started raising on more and more marginal hands, and then on outright crap. I was stealing a good 2/3 of the blinds from him like this, and he never reraised me, so even a call from him would allow me to see the flop and possibly take the pot if the cards were good. I definitely think playing the player vs playing my cards gave me EV+ in that situation.

I think we all know that the scenarios you paint are perhaps valid ones, but what about those that do it at the start of a tournament or when theres no pressure on them to build up their stacks.

If you are short stacked then you go in with anything, what have you got to lose... If you come up against AA then so be it. You were going out anyway if you didnt do something. Should you get lucky then fair enough.

Likewise if you are chip leader and its hardly gonna cost you any of your stack then why not have a bash.

What we are talking about is people who do it for no logical or sensible reason. There is no pressure. They are risking their entire stack on a call that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They dont consider that they could lose, they merely think of the increase in their chips should they get lucky, and thats precisely what they need... To get lucky..

If you have AA you have a hand. If you have 7 4 you dont. You dont even have a good hand.. You find me one person who can say that when they call an all in raise with 7 4 they believe that to be the best hand on the table...

As for your final point over what you would prefer to have against AA, then thats a nonsensical point. If we could choose hands to go against AA with then QQ or 10 J suited would be even better, but you cant decide which hands you are going to have when your opponent gets AA. And I know that 7 4 in my pocket is NOT the hand I want want. In fact its one of the last hands I would possibly want..

Fair enough. But you dont think I was saying that 7/4 is of equal a hand as any other. Yes mathematically it is a bad hand. What Im saying is dont be surprised if you get beat by it or called by it or someone raises by it. It happens. So many of poker's question is first answered by "It depends". I love it when people come in against me with 7/4. I have no problem with that. If I call the all in Im favored. But I dont call people donks just because they play "whatever" and beat me. This is poker.
At the wsop I got busted by someone calling my all in raise with my A/Q s against his K/Jo when KKJ came on the flop. Im totally at lost why he calls with such a "rookie" hand with a medium size stack. But hey S... Happens!
