Without the "Moneymaker effect" poker industry would be more or less on the same path and that is growth (at the time). Perhaps it would need several more years but in the end some other name would emerge as amateur who cashed in wsop Main event (it wouldn't need to be a win itself).

In my opinion poker industry itself is very strong and it would "use" (or should we say promote) someone elses name as example who can earn fortune with investment which is less than 100$.

Main reason why I believe in that is that today throughout other industries we have multiple examples. We have someone who became first and very popular as Youtube streamer, someone who got very rich by buying and selling Bitcoin at the right moment, someone who became rich in buying and selling stocks, someone who became rich with online webshop and so on and so on.....

Imagine that Chris Moneymaker had busted out before the bubble in the 2003 WSOP Main Event and never became a household name in poker. Where do you think poker would be today if the "Moneymaker Effect" had never happened?

Personally, I don't know if he really popularized poker, look, I'm not diminishing his skills or his winnings, but I had more influence from Negreanue and Ivey than him to join the game.

Maybe he facilitated many people's dream of making a living from poker, but I can't see a sudden change in the development of Poker.

The "Moneymaker Effect" was a pivotal moment in poker history, transforming the game into a global phenomenon. Had Moneymaker not won, poker might not have experienced the same explosive growth in online poker platforms, which democratized the game. The proliferation of televised poker events, which attracted more players and sponsors, may have been slower. The dream of turning a small investment into a life-changing payday might not have become as widespread. This shift also affected professional players, as the influx of new players created a more competitive landscape. Without Moneymaker's win, the poker pro scene might be different today, and the younger generation of players might not have had the same opportunities.

I think that any player who wins the WSOP or other significant tournament contributes to the development of poker, Chris Moneymaker is undoubtedly a talented player and his contribution to the development of the game was no exception.

I think the development of online Poker would have happened anyway. Online gambling has exploded without any help. Also other comparable activities like online Chess etc

I think it would not have changed anything globally, perhaps it was, as it was called differently

It certainly encouraged a lot of people to start playing poker, but in the scenario you mentioned, poker would certainly be less known and less approved by society!

Personally, I have great respect for this him, a pleasant person who is still passionate about the game, just like at the beginning. The story behind winning the Main Event is really worth telling to the grandchildren. Let's remember that he earned his way into the 2003 Series after finishing first in a $40 satellite tournament — the prize was a $10,000 tournament seat on PokerStars. He was in debt at the time and came close to selling off his entry. Instead, at 27, he took the risk, went to Vegas, and the rest is history. He became a legend of this wonderful game.

I don't know where poker would have been at this moment without the ''Moneymaker effect'', but surely his victory sparked a massive poker boom, inspiring a new generation of players to take up the game. His impact on the poker industry is still felt today, as he works as an ambassador for the Americas Cardroom site, encouraging new players to dip their toes into the world of poker both in the live game and the online game which was in its infancy at that time.

I think the online version of poker would have still influenced poker in a positive direction. Satalites Would have been introduced and poker tournaments online would flourish eventually. Though the MoneMaker effect has been instrumental in the advancement of poker to todays generation.

Moneymaker winning the WSOP changed poker in culture forever. I believe poker would not be what it is today if it wasn't for that, for sure, not even close. It made poker popular. Anyone could win big, Moneymaker proved it. So, online poker as well as live poker wouldn't be nearly as big as it is today.

Chris Moneymaker has been a great ambassador for the game of poker, and his famous triumph no doubt helped boost the popularity of poker . I would argue , as others have said ,that the card cameras , ESPN coverage and commentary, and the growth of internet access likely would have led to ballooning interest even without him .It was just part of the public zeitgeist.

I think poker has changed forever since that great night when a simple player wins satellites and satellites and manages to reach the grand final of a world tournament and become a world champion.

I personally see poker as an elite sport, and I consider, along with the moneymaker effect, the globalization of internet access as fundamental factors in the popularization of poker.
I can't speak for the USA or Europe, but as a Brazilian living in a poor country, the moneymaker effect along with the internet has allowed people without opportunities to know and learn about this sport, receive a wonderful chance to participate.

Without Moneymaker´s win the poker landscape certainly would look a bit more different today. Maybe the game´s popularity would have increased slower without him but his win acclerated the rise of the game at a time when the game became more popular.

I think we would not have progressed as a sport, without the prize money we would be stagnant like any other game.

That was the donkeymaker effect - there wouldn't be so many bad players.

There are no irreplaceable people in poker, one hero will be replaced by a new one, poker is developing in its own way. It seems that he has noticeably more critics than fans, but one cannot dispute the role he played in the epic metamorphosis. The “Poker Boom” will forever remain in the history of poker as an event that gave a huge impetus to the development of poker. He attracted a huge number of players to poker and created huge competition in poker.

Hello, I think it was something important for poker because of what happened to him, being an amateur player, through a satellite he was able to qualify for a large tournament and win it in which he obtained a million-dollar prize, this caused more online players, rooms like pokerstars, which increased the number of players, as well as satellites of small tournaments to be able to play large tournaments such as WSOP, LAPT, PCA, EPT, as well as the number of players that increased exponentially, I think that online poker does not would have grown so fast without the Moneymaker effect.

I think the poker boom was inevitable. If it wasn't Chris it would have just been delayed. An amateur would have won it eventually and kicked off the poker boom. I am glad it was Chris it could not have happened to a better bloke with the perfect last name.

I am really surprised of this question, as I didn`t know the "Moneymaker" story before - feeling ashamed.. ;)

so I am not sure, but in Europe/Germany Texas.-Holdem-Poker got a boost after the James Bond movie - Casino Royal and also by TV shows of "Stefan Raab"... so I imagine, that the "Moneymaker effect" in USA was bigger than in Europe/Germany, but not overall was the decisive factor for Poker going popular.

I think that all esports that don't reward money don't have as much fame as those that reward some money. Even because what moves the world is money and whenever we play a game it is necessary to have some prize in money to the winner.
