It helped poker enormously at the time, it was an incredible effect, an amateur player who otherwise only played with friends wins the wsop Main Event. It was a story out of a picture book to attract many players from all over the world to the tables. Perfect marketing for the time. But I also think that if it hadn't been Moneymaker, someone else would have taken poker forward, it's just a sport that appeals to too many people around the world. Because the attraction is there to win a lot from nothing, to become a millionaire, that attraction alone makes it so insanely interesting to so many millions of people around the world. Why else do so many people play the lottery in the world? To become rich from one day to the next. You hear these stories about poker all the time, which is why the hype will never stop. That's my opinion.

The “Manimaker effect” had a huge impact on the development of poker and made this game super popular. Of course, it's not about Moneymaker specifically, because if it weren't for him, it would be different. But fate so pleased that Moneymaker was in the right place at the right time and turned out to be a nice guy and a nice person at the same time. It was a real-life fairy tale. Everyone imagined themselves in Moneymaker's shoes and believed that miracles can happen. For one, I still believe that now. This gives us hope and a desire to play again and again.

Cash game wouldnt be as profigtable as it is today with lots of new people who are trying out poker for the very first time.

I think the Moneymaker effect has been a door that opened for everyone who doesn't like poker.
What's more, after him came many other players like him, who played their part to get there, for example another is Joe Hachem, winner of the Wsoop 2005.
They were normal players who for different reasons jumped into the "big window" of poker, which at the time was only for those who dedicated themselves to the game, let's say "professionally."
I am referring to players like Doyle Brunson, San Farha, Scotty Nguyen among others, who today we know thanks to the "Moneymaker effect."
I definitely believe that the poker industry worldwide owes a lot to this great player.
Today, poker is a great industry, and as your reflection says, I don't know if it would be such without Chris Moneymaker.

Live poker grew based on Moneymaker win and table hole cam for WSOP and WPT MTTs. Live poker would have grown a little slower without Moneymaker effect. Online poker would have growth alot slower without Moneymaker winning Main event seat from Pokerstars' satellite. Pokerstars would not been dominiate over next few years without Moneymaker effect.

If Sammy Farha beat Moneymaker in that epic heads-up,the Poker Boom would never have happened.Just compare the ME prizes before and after Moneymaker´s victory..Also , the fact he was American helped the game grow faster.

Hi,
I find some statistics about number of poker rooms etc. IT shows that 2003 jump with poker popularity. Od course other factors also caused that grow more powerfull. The World Poker Tour was created, where viewers could see players' cards. James McManus published the book Positively Fifth Street, promoted as a bestseller by the New York Times. Since 2001 internet was also more and more popular, economy was excelent and people have got more money to spend. All those things have something with poker's world.

Truly a legend. That championship showed everyone that even if a recreational player can become a champion. I'm sure he influenced many admirers like me, who is passionate about the game, even though it's recreational.

He was the man back then, it was right as I was getting in to poker so he was definitely influential in that sense that anyone could win big.

Its simple: the time was right for somebody to have a effect on the poker scene. if it hadn't been him, it would have been somebody else, cause the poker scene is bigger than just one person. eventually some other amateur would have had a winning result in WSOP and the "moneymaker effect" would have been named something different.

Alternate fictional imagination: some guy named John chose to name himself Moneymaker, John Moneymaker. But John was trying to cheat his way to money and then got caught... after that the moneymaker effect would have been used as a negative example.

I think that's where poker would be at, because sooner or later, someone would have done something like that, where they would have satellited a few dollars into some big live tournament and then won it.
But there's no doubt that if that didn't happen, poker wouldn't be as popular, because that's what it took for anyone to believe they could be a world poker champion.

Without a doubt, the moneymaker effect was magical for the sport. It showed the entire world that anyone can reach the top but few achieve it. I think that the boom we currently have would have taken a little longer without moneymaker and its history, but I am totally Surely it would have happened in some way, we are in a moment where poker is extremely competitive, now everyone wants to learn, not just play for fun, and it's great anyway, thanks moneymaker, but surely some others could also achieve it

2003 and poker then compared to now has grown multifold.
what happened at that wsop did boost the game of poker, but i cannot give all credit to Chris as such.
it was, as in any sport a catalyst to an already growing game of poker.
no one individual can take credit for something like a huge poker madness that has been there for years and years.

the hand of God goal of Maradona did boost football but, you cannot give credit to just one person.
its a lot of factors that make a sport great.

The biggest proof of the importance of a amateur victory in the main professional poker tournament is the increase of players registered in the tournament in 2003 and 2004. From 839 to a total of 2,576 players the following year.
The "you can do it" factor really changed the game.

Poker still seems like a pretty niche game. Not a lot of people I know really play poker. I do think however, that moneymaker had a big impact during his days and made a lot of people realize the potential in becoming a poker pro and living the poker dream

This undoubtedly played a significant role in the development of poker. But I think so, if Chris had not made this breakthrough then, someone else would have done it and the event would have had a different name.

IMO, if the 'Moneymaker Effect' had never happened poker might not have experienced that incredible growth* yes there were a few other factors too but everyone likes a 'Cinderella story' and Moneymaker's win essentially brought poker into the mainstream and gave hope to more casual/ recreational players that poker wasn't just a game only for the professionals...

So, because it was a victory of an amateur player at the most prestigious poker event in the world, it helped popularize poker both live and online and attract a large number of new players to the game(the increase of players registered in the tournament in 2003 and 2004 shows that* from 839 to 2,576 players the following year... I don't have any stats for poker online but for sure the 'Moneymaker Effect' resulted in a significant increase in interest in poker and a boom in the online poker industry).
