It’s easy to switch off when you fold—check your phone, wait for the next hand, etc. I used to do that a lot.
But there’s actually so much information to pick up when you’re not involved. Who’s bluffing too much? Who hates folding? Who only bets strong?
I’ve started paying more attention even when I’m out of the hand, and it makes future decisions way easier.
Feels like free information that most players just ignore.
Do you stay engaged when you’re not in a hand, or tune out until you get cards?

It depends on how many tables you’re playing at the same time. If you’re playing a lot, it’s hard. But if you’re only playing one or a couple, it’s much easier to watch other players and try to understand how they play. Usually, I don’t pay enough attention though, I mainly focus on my own game.

I’m the same way. Most of the tournament I’m mainly focused on making the best decisions and accumulating chips, but once we get near the bubble or a final table I definitely pay a lot more attention to payouts and stack distribution. That’s where ICM pressure really starts changing the dynamics.

People who completely ignore payouts in those spots are leaving money on the table in my opinion. At the same time, you can’t become so payout focused that you blind yourself down waiting to ladder. There’s a balance.

In live games ofc. - you "pick" up so much information...;)

Online, in our CC games, I just don't care... Cash games are a different story! ;)

Really? You only play the CC freerolls online ?
I somehow pictured you as an online grinder beyond low stakes xD

Yeah mtts are very time consuming.
Without my phone, I probably could only play one a month 😅

If I play on my phone (I do it sometimes), that's a disaster. Sometimes I forget that I'm playing, I leave phone, who knows where, sometimes it's in the car "sitting out"...lol

Totally agree—there’s a lot of ‘free info’ when you’re not in the hand. I try to stay engaged and watch showdowns, bet sizing, and timing tells. It really helps build reads and makes future decisions easier. Zoning out means missing value

Observe your enemy's actions and take notes.Observe your opponent's actions and take notes. After some observation, you'll begin to understand roughly what and how your opponent plays and what they want from the hand. Based on this, you'll have some solid information for your own exploits of your opponent's observed tendencies.

I agree with this a lot. Watching hands when you’re not involved can give very valuable information about opponents and their tendencies. Sometimes you notice things like sizing patterns, bluff frequency, or who plays too emotionally. It definitely helps make better decisions later, especially against regular players you stay at the table with for a while.

I am always observing and looking for information even more when I am not in a hand. The more info I get the more help I get when I am in a hand.

paying attention when you"re not actively participating gives you a significant advantage, because you can observe without pressure and detect patterns in other players, this information facilitates future decisions and reduces uncertainty, although many tune out out of habit or boredom, staying attentive even briefly, makes a big deífference to performance.

Well, generally I don't play more than 5 tables and I'm always paying attention to what's happening at the tables, of course it's difficult to see moves like the ones he mentions that way

Always. Folding doesn’t mean you’re off the clock. That’s when you study opponents. Bet sizes, timing, patterns, tilt spots. The edge is in the hands you don’t play. If you’re not watching, you’re just donating.

I play at many tables and I can't stay focused. Sometimes I play playing the guitar so I don't get anxious and play badly. I've tried several strategies related to being super attentive to the game or playing without even looking at the cards just to test other aspects of the game. Generally, my basic focus is on the range and the position.
