This was over a month ago. Very sure live cash game players will know what Im talking about when casinos have some sheet for everyone and when u have certain hand, you get some stamp and then when u hit massive hand like 4 of a kind, straight flush, you get paid extra money. So basically its live equivalent of rakeback.

One player got 4 of a kind by having pocket 2s, flopped a set, and rivered another 2. He was paid $100 extra on top of winning the pot. 30 minutes later. I had TJd. Flop was TT5. I checked, random player bets, I call. Turn is another Ten. I check, he shoves, I instant call. Rolled over my TJ. River is A, not that it matters. Villain rolls over A5o. So i showed my sheet to get a stamp on quads. But they said it has to be "quads", not 4 of a kind. I said whats the difference? They said quad is u having a pocket pair and having other 2 cards on the board while 4 of a kind is 3 same numbers on the board and you only having one card to make 4 of a kind. Someone at the table told its equivalent to set vs trips where set is a 3 of a kind using pocket pair and trip is a 3 of a kind by having a pair on the board and you holding one card.

Is this true? I never heard difference between 4 of a kind and quads. I didnt even get rewarded for the 4 of a kind. During that time, i just chalked it up and said whatever, and just played. But is this common?

Yes, it's true, I've read about it and I know that a full-fledged Four of a Kind is when you have a pocketbook pair on your hands.

Yeah, it's a bit of a distinction without much difference but the difference has more to do with the play of the hand, .....,doesn't have anything to do with the end result and the fact you made the hand...., I might be tempted to go full Karen on that ruling 😎👍

They mentioned that when u make straight flush, u have to use both cards. Board cannot have 4s5s6s7s and u make straight flush just by having 3s. You cant also get a bad beat jackpot by just holding 3s while your villain holds 8s. This just looks like casino's loophole to make it harder for them to reward us. Its already hard enough to see 4 of a kind or straight flush in general but they put conditions to it also. 😮‍💨

It was probably in the fine print, that you had to use both of your hold cards to make the hand. And actually this makes sense, because 4 of a kind using both hold cards is much more rare than 4 of a kind using only one hold card. Or what if the board runs out 44A-4-4? Should they then pay out the jackpot to everyone, who made it to the river, because they are all playing the board? I would guess, that this is pretty standard for most if not all card rooms, that run this kind of promotion.

Well it is the same with set and trips.

A set is you have a pocket pair and you hit the third card on flop, turn, or river( your hand 77, flop 7 3 T.
Trips is the other way round you have a card that is on the board twice ( your hand 76, board K 4 7 2 7).

That literally answers everything. Before reading this, i felt little cheated about my 4 of a kind. But now, when i think about it, if board is 4 4 4 4 A, everyone has 4 of a kind. Or if board itself has a straight flush, everyone has a straight flush. Using both hole cards will make sense for bonus or jackpot. Very good answer.

Its spot on correct and i have come across this example before - keep hoping whenever you hold a pocket pair and a flop, turn or river brings you the others...it will happen one day 🙂

Depends on the Casino but I have heard of this before, Some hands at showdown are called differently depending on how you got there, Like Quads and 4 of a Kind, Trips and 3 of a kind, Even a Full House or a Boat. all describe the same type of hands but it depends on how you got to those hands.
Basically though you must play both cards in your hand to to qualify for Quad's.

I didn't know the difference, it makes sense

First I hear about this. I find myself enlightened.
Thank you for sharing!

Just for clarification quads and four of a kind is the same thing, since quad literally means four. This is why, a bike with four wheels is called a quad bike. Its just the same as trips being three of a kind. For three of a kind we use the word set for a situation, where we use two hold cards to make the hand, but a similar term does not exist for using two hold cards to make four of a kind . So this is not about the terminology but about the terms and conditions of the promotion.

This is new to me amd I have played poker for a long time. I do know I have seen in small print that to qualify for a royal flush bonus, that 2 cards from your hand must be used. So this quad/4 of a kind deal is eerily similar.

I didn't know either that there's a difference like with set and trips.
But for actually winning a high hand/jackpot hand you will need both of your hole cards in any casino. that is common practice 🙂

What? I thought "Quads" and "Four of a Kind" were the same thing just like how a "Full House" and "Boat" are the same thing. I'd be challenging this ruling.

I know that many players say "deuce" for a 2 and "trey" for a 3 (for example, 73o pronounced: seven-trey-offsuit), but I thought this was to help minimize confusion with pairs or three of a kind. I've got Two Pair of Aces and Twos is a bit too confusing 😉 compared to saying Two Pair Aces and dueces. It is a small thing to minimize phonetic confusion. I just thought Quads and Four of a Kind was named for the same reasoning, but are the same thing.
