Do you play freerolls differently?

I've been thinking about how much strategy should change when playing freerolls compared with regular buy-in tournaments.

The early stages can be extremely unpredictable because some players are willing to risk their entire stack with very marginal hands.

Personally, I try to avoid getting involved in huge pots without a strong hand early on, while still taking advantage of obvious opportunities.

Do you think it's better to play tighter and wait for good spots, or should we embrace the higher variance and try to build a big stack early?

I usually play freerolls a bit tighter early, because there’s no reason to take unnecessary high-variance spots. Once the field gets smaller, I’m more willing to open up and put pressure on players who are trying to survive.

Yes, I think freerolls require a slightly different approach. Since there’s no financial risk, players tend to call much wider and take more risks, especially in the early stages. I try to stay patient, avoid unnecessary spots, and take advantage of mistakes when the right opportunities come. As the tournament progresses, I become more focused on stack sizes, position, and survival.

What changes for me is not tight or loose. It is fold equity. Early in a freeroll nobody folds, so bluffing multiway just donates chips. I value bet thinner and I stop barrelling.
Later it flips. With no buy in to protect, laddering at the bottom is worth almost nothing, so I take flips I would decline in a paid MTT.
Value early, pressure once the field thins.
