Tight AND aggressive. They are not opposite to each other. Opposite to tight is loose. Opposite to aggressive is passive.
Exactly this. To comment on this, we have to understand the play styles. We must also understand that each one of these styles is an imbalance, and imbalances in our tendencies are usually bad because they make us exploitable. However the tag player is a special imbalance.
Tight means that we play few hands, we only see the flop with good hands and we only continue post flop with strength or at least strong
equity.
Loose means that we play more hands, more so-so hands (maybe even a little trash), see lots of flops, and are willing to continue with less or no value, weak equity.
Passive means that we call a lot, do not bet nor raise often, and rarely bluff. Also, when we do bet/raise we tend to size smaller, and for some people they resist all-in.
Aggressive means that we bet and raise often, take charge, are not afraid to bluff, tend to size larger and are more willing to go all-in.
We can be tight and aggressive (tag), loose and aggressive (lag or in extreme cases, maniac), loose and passive (calling station) or tight and passive (nit).
Notice that the terms maniac, calling station and nit are all terms the we give to dumb fish. Also notice that tag is not a term used for fish. ; ) Yes one can be a weak tag if one doesn't get his ranges or his sizings right (and I suspect that I may be one of those at times) and also one can be a good lag if someone really knows what they are doing and have very strong post-flop reads and skills (someone like Phil Laak). But for the most part, ALL of these imbalanced styles are fish except for tag, while nits and calling stations (the 2 passive styles) are definitely just fish.
Or we can be balanced. If we are playing against professional competition, we want to be balanced or we will get exploited. However, if we are playing against amateurs, we want to play tag, because tag is the way to exploit all of the other imbalances. It's that simple.
Nobody at micro and low stakes online is balanced. First, balanced is the most difficult to play. The vast majority of us don't know how. I don't. I readily admit it. I'm not nearly that good. But even a pro who knows how to play balanced will not play balanced at low stakes against us imbalanced fish. He will switch to tag because it is more profitable.
As for me, I'm always tag. How consistently that I'm putting that into practice, I'd need a coach to analyze my stats and give me a precise answer but my aim is always always tag. Even as the tournament changes and I adjust, I'm tag. I just vary the amounts of tightness and aggression. I'm usually the taggiest player at my tables.
