I have noticed that freerolls can be very unpredictable because players are often willing to call with a much wider range than they would in a normal tournament.
Some players recommend playing very tight during the early stages, while others say you should take advantage of loose opponents and build a big stack early.
Personally, I find it difficult to decide when to be aggressive and when to wait.
What strategy do you prefer in the early stages of a freeroll?
Do you play tight and wait for strong hands, or do you try to accumulate chips as quickly as possible?

I play aggressively at the start — either I build a stack of chips or I get eliminated quickly. If I can guarantee a comfortable battery, I'll switch to a more conservative style.

In the very beginning I am super cautious , I mean super tight. I don't want to participate in many pots with more than 2 opponents. If I am lucky enough to double up early then I try to play more loosely to gather even more chips.

The question does not make sense at all in a poker context.

You should play tight AND aggressive, no matter if it is a freeroll or a regular buy in tournament.

A consistent/stringent strategy is a baseline for all poker tournament.

Yes. This question comes up fairly often on this forum: tight or aggressive? Tight and aggressive are not opposites.

Tight and loose are opposites and pertain to ranges. Aggressive and passive are opposites and pertain to bet frequencies and sizings. These two aspects are completely separate from each other.

If someone tends to only play good hands, he is tight. If someone tends to bet more rather than flat call a ton, and when he bets he doesn't mind betting larger, he is aggressive.

So someone who sees a ton of flops (regardless of betting actions) is loose. Someone who limps and calls a lot is passive. Someone who sees fewer flops (especially out of position) is tight. Someone who tends to open more, lead and barrel (or even raise) more is aggressive.

We need to stop looking at players on a linear spectrum. Play styles are mapped on a 2D grid.

In the early stages of a freeroll, tight and value-driven is the way to go, but as the tournament deepens, switching to controlled aggressive play becomes essential

I follow my gameplan no matter what.I observe players, if they play loose I play tight if they play tight I play looser.I take advantage of the type of players I encounter and keep adjusting if they change their way of playing.Always observing and gathering information.

For me, playing tight or aggressive is a skill that shifts from one table to another, depending on the opponents or the hands I am dealt. Generally, adapting one's style is an integral part of poker, as these skills are sometimes the only way to win.
Good luck🙂

Note how your opponent plays. If they are very tight then you play the opposite and rob them.

If you are playing a LAG you tighten up your range. If your range is too loose against a LAG, when they 3bet you will have to fold. Their range is very wide and they play with full on aggression.

These are the times when you tighten your range and induce them by calling and wait for them to do the betting for you.

I usually prefer a balanced approach. Early in freerolls I'm going to be a bit tighter than the rest of the table, but I won't be afraid to seize on opportunities to isolate looser players. There's no point in trying to gamble your way into an oversized stack straight away. You need to find the players who are calling too widely and put pressure on them when you have a strong hand and a good position. Once you get chips you can really start to turn up the aggression. ♠️

In the early stages of a freeroll, I prefer to play relatively tight and let the other players make the big mistakes. There are usually plenty of loose calls and unnecessary all-ins, so I don’t see much reason to risk my tournament with marginal hands just to build a big stack quickly.
However, tight doesn’t mean passive. When I have a strong hand, I’m happy to play aggressively and extract maximum value because weaker hands will often call. As the field gets smaller and the game becomes more structured, I gradually widen my range and look for more opportunities to steal blinds and use position. For me, survival early and controlled aggression later works better than trying to double up at any cost.

How I play depends on the type of play the opponents are playing. I always check their profile. Mostly they are playing not that long poker, of course here and there someone who’s starting again for example. But I look how they play like in a few hands. Also there might be sit outs. If you have the last call before sit-outs, just raise because they might get the blinds, and it’s always nice to get some even it looks not that much. As long as the sit outs not getting much I feel mostly fine 🙈

Also, if there is someone going all in every hand, know that you need a top pair of hands to go all in too. Like AK or AA. below that I don’t go all in with them.

Also, keep as much to your type of play always.
