If you are going to be a serious player this is a good tool.
Sorta like having a business plan, you want to be able to project your expected profit and measure how things are progressing.
You don't run a business to lose money and that applies to poker.

Day 20 completed, poker is a game filled with ups and downs and surprises, which I believe is a crucial characteristic to consider. Managing your bankroll properly is essential to maintain your financial stability in poker in the long run. Thank you for the lesson!

How do I balance the impulse to bet (because the opponent has a wide range) with the need to check to protect sufficient showdown value?

I honestly believe that by reading about BRM and balanced play, you will soon get yourself into a position where you don't have this issue. As they say, "Practice makes Perfect". The temptation to play like this, as you seem to know your opponent. will soon become balanced too. You will no doubt have tried this play against him before. How did that go? How many times have you won and lost, and in what positions were you both playing from? Has it balanced out?
