You have a strong hand on the river, and you have to decide whether you want to bet or just check. If there are worse hands in your opponent's range that would call, then betting can extract additional value from the pot.

That's the whole point of Value Betting: getting called by hands that you beat.

Do you usually value bet or play it safe with a strong hand on the river? ♠️

It's a bit tricky to be honest, sometimes you go for the value bet and get shoved on, disgusting feeling. I only do it in position mostly and I usually opt for check calling out of position

My decision depends a lot on how my opponent has played the hand. I don't look at my hand in isolation. I pay attention to their betting patterns, the board and how they have reacted on each street. If they have been calling with weaker hands and the river doesn't change much, I would probably go for a value bet. But if their actions suggest they have a very strong hand, or the river completes an obvious draw, I would be more cautious and consider checking. For me, value betting is not just about having a strong hand. It's about understanding what my opponent is likely to have and whether they are willing to pay me with something worse

First, are we in position or out of position. If we are in position and Villain checks, we need to bet if we have value, unless the river card completes draws over our made hand. If we are out of position and have been check-calling the previous streets we can probably check-call or check-raise the river.

Of course, how strong are we? Do we have nuts? Nuts in position is ALWAYS a bet, just a question of sizing to make sure that we get called. How wet is the board? How many draws are complete by the river? If we are full house or better, we have very thick value, but if we are 3ok or worse, we need pot control. If the draws all bust or even if most bust, our pair, 2-pair, 3ok value is much stronger.

yeah exactly, their betting tells you a lot about whether you can get that extra value
