First let me talk about my life situation overall:

Maybe you know Michelle, aka mimietmour, my girlfriend from the last 23 years who's now in a wheelchair since 2021. To fully take care of her (and it's also my choice let's be honest), I don't have a lot of free time outside. The only regular hobby I allow myself outside of the house is a monthly Casino trip on the first tuesday of every month. I choose mainly to play poker, my favorite game there. Michelle is staking me about 33% of my cash game buy-ins because it helps me financially and she knows she will receive dividend from it more often than not.

But not yesterday. I was at the 1/2 table for about 90 minutes, playing my usual tight game, not winning or losing much. I knew mostly what every player was capable of, watching closely the action of every hand. I was at 110$ after starting at 125$. Yes, I know I should buy-in at max, but to play my A game, I can't afford losing 250$ (and I saw a guy buying in for 300$ which is against the Casino buy-in rule wtf?!?).

This hand happened:

I was MP when I was dealt JJ. Since there were a lot of limpers in previous hands, I open-raised at 10$ to discourage most of them. Everyone folded (I was expecting it with me being tight) except for the huge (maybe 500$ behind) loose stack who raised at 25$. What would be your move here?

I moved all-in. The guy, explaining out loud his thought process before acting, remembered the few times I was in a hand, raising less preflop ( to 6 or 7$) and decided to call.

Dealer dealt all the cards before we showed our hand. 4 little cards (don't know exactly which, my memory is flinching big time here) and my opponent says out loud: "You got me" before dealer turned a Q.

We show our hands: JJ vs KQ. "Oops... I got you" were his exact words.

I know it was a slight favorite and I shouldn't make a case about it, but it just disgusted me. I know my odds, my skills and everything, but I need other opinions about it. Please, don't let me shake my head all alone and comment my story. Any sort of comments will be welcome, believe me

Next casino: october 6th. I don't know if I will have fully recovered by that time.

JJ vs KQ is definitely a frustrating way to end a session, especially after playing carefully for 90 minutes. You made your move with the best hand, so I’d chalk it up to variance and try not to let the river Q ruin the whole experience. 🎰

Thanks for comment. At least I have over a month to swallow it.

That's a tough one, easy to say after it was played but I would have re-raised him pre-flop and then jammed on the flop, with such a loose player you may have gotten him to fold but maybe not, hate jacks🤢

I don't think you did anything wrong here, its just the disgustingly exciting nature of JJ, but against is range which will likely inlcude AJ and less, KJ, KT, QJ, JTs, maybe even some Q9s, QTs K9 K7s, if he's pretty loose, etc plus lots of worse pairs, I think you are doing well here long term.....it just happens that this time he rivered you.

No one likes losing money, especially when you play carefully and its a decent chunk of money for you guys, but you HAVE to shake it off before you go next time, or you'll be making worse decisions based on this hand! You have to be able to run this similar hand over and over again, as realistically its printing right??

How you do that, I'm not so sure....maybe if you can do some overtime at work or something, just tell yourself that its paying it off or something, then draw a line under it!

I'd love to see a thread of your casino visits, totalling up through the year. 🙂

I think he don't call me if I jam the flop.

Thanks for your input Frank!

The other guy is a total donk reraising a 5x open of a tight player on kq and then also calling off the shove. Also extremely rude and dumb to announce "u got me" before the hand is over. In a fair world his hand should be dead. But i guess he will soon donate it back to someone anyway.

He cant really reraise there without going allin on a 110 $ stack. Makes no sense to reraise to 60 or similar and leaving like 50 behind with JJ there. Plus he didnt knew his opponent holds kq and the river is a q at this point, lol

If I were you, I'd pay $25. On the flop, raise to $30; on the turn, go all-in. I believe he'd fold KQ on the turn. Good luck on October 6th!

Hi Yannick,

I'm not going to go over the hand. You know very well that it's been played wrong since the start.
What I want to point out here is the reason why you played it wrong. IMO, it's because of the size of your stack. Which bring me to the buy in. I don't agree with what you said bro. You are a good player. Always sit at the table with the maximum allowed. If you happen to have a bad session, you stop when/if you lose the amount you can afford to lose. Cash the rest and go home.

As of now, just turn that page and look ahead. It's in the past anyway. And the past is gone.

Say hi to Michelle for me please, tell her that we really miss her at the tables, and I hope things get better soon.

That is in principle a great idea... The thing is if I lose again this way or if somehow I end up playing bad, I will not be happy to write a story about it.

I will be able to. I know it. I overcame this some months ago:

I have 33, table is loose overall so the pot is relatively high. I call to set mine possibly. Flop: 3JJ. Everybody checks. Turn 6. One player put 25, everybody folds, I raise to 50, he pushes I call. He shows JT. And you know the rest...

To be honest, I was less angry then than I was about yesterday. I understand his move. Not from yesterday's opponent.

Honestly, I don't want to see the turn here... I know myself and I would be scared of seeing a high card.

But I see where you're going with this. Thanks for your input.

Wow, what a total “fish move” from him to reraise you with KQ. Honestly, you played the hand exactly how I would have played it. Sometimes you make the right decision, put your money in good and the cards just decide to be cruel. He definitely got lucky this time, especially getting there on the river. Thats poker, though you cant control what happens after the money goes in.

Dont let this one get to you. If you run into him at the tables again, I would be more than happy to see you get your money back from him! Just keep playing your game and making those solid decisions. Over the long run, those are the spots that will work out in your favor. He got away with one this time, but I wouldnt worry about it you played it right! 👍

He cant really reraise there without going allin on a 110 $ stack. Makes no sense to reraise to 60 or similar and leaving like 50 behind with JJ there. Plus he didnt knew his opponent holds kq and the river is a q at this point, lol

That last part is what I think too.

Yes, I will rebound back, but honestly, I don't think I could go over another bad beat against him... I'd rather not face him again even though I know he's fishy 😛

Thanks for your input!

Sami, Sami, Sami... Yes, I know you're right! I just can't afford going with the max buy-in month after month. So what I could do is skip a month so I could buy-in max one month and take a break the next one...

Stop when I lose 125$? You know very well that poker doesn't work like that. What if I have AA and that lucky guy pushes all-in preflop with over 500$? I fold because I can't afford a 250$ bad beat?

But again, in an ideal world... you are right. 100%

Michelle's coming back next season in the league and says hi too 🙂

First of all I'd like to say , your story is heartwarming & raises my spirits up . For doing the things the way u did and everything , you're already winner in my book ! 👍

As for poker , why are u playing cash games with half stack ? If u don't have $$$ atm u can always either play lower limits or save more money for the limits u decided to play ... Playing with half stack is just ... Well u know . And also u should have for few rebuys in case things go wrong , and should always rebuy to max ... Cause when u hit a hand or flop or whatever , u want it all , not half ! 😉

And yeah , calling others allin with KQ for +/-50bb is very fishy , the best scenario he could have hoped for is the one that actually happens (ofc if u dont do this with hands like KJ or QJ or 78s or similar). And even though me personally am not satisfied with jacks overall , its still a premium . Sadly you lost this flip , don't let it bother u . Happens to all of us on a daily basis , thats why bankroll management is so important !

And next time keep this in mind for this type of player . If he likes to 3bet alot and with wide range , and make continuation bets over 80% of the time , best action against that kind of player is to trap him , and let him hang himself . Ofc if u can handle the insults later on 🙂

Only one man honest opinion 👍 better luck next time champ

In the poker world, that could happen ofc, but the aces can win too. It's a risky business and you're in it. Still, buy in for the max gives you a better edge and keeps the probabilities on your favor.
As to skipping a month, yes, I'd rather do that than buying for less than the max.

Thanks for such nice words! I appreciate it!

As stated before when answering to Najisami, yes, I should wait a month to buy for max stack next time. 100% agree with you!

Trapping with JJ when playing money scared is simply not a good idea for me. I know my weaknesses... unfortunately.

Thanks for your input 🙂

Hands do not matter much when you're playing trapper vs aggro monkey , position is the key ! But ofc u need to have a bankroll for this , u can't play scared trapper with half stack & 20$ for a ride home lol

There are people who are down way more money than that, my friend; I'm sure that in the long run, if you keep playing your game correctly, you'll win it back. I'm down about 80 dollars myself, but I'm not letting it get me down. I just hope Gritz doesn't read this, or he'll start making fun of me

You can't control what your opponent will do. (Obviously, the KQ call for 55 BB was atrociously bad.) So let's focus on your part. 🙂

First of all, buying in for only 62 BB is pretty bad IMO, especially in a cash game. I don't think you should buy in for less than 100 BB, especially if you're a winning player like you said and believe you have an edge over the other players.

I also strongly believe that you shouldn't gamble with money you can't afford to lose without putting yourself in a financial burden or feeling bad about it for months.

You said that you were getting stacked for 33%, so around $42, and you were putting $83 of your own money in. Well, if it's going to affect you for that long, you're surely playing over your stakes and should consider moving down to a game where the buy-in isn't going to affect you so much mentally, and where you'll be able to make a full buy-in and play 100 BB+ deep.

And now about the hand itself. 🙂 You made it clear that you couldn't afford even one full buy-in, and I can understand your logic behind raising 5x preflop to avoid having too many callers. But at the same time, you put yourself in a spot where, when you get 3-bet, your 4-bet is almost forced to be an all-in...

You need to ask yourself: if you're playing with half a bullet max, do you really want to put 55 BB in with JJ, or just flat the 3-bet and see a flop? Maybe you want to take advantage of your edge postflop if you think you're the better player.

You also mentioned that you had a pretty tight image and expected them to call or 3-bet very tight. So when someone 2.5x'd your 5 BB open, what range did you put him on? Of course, now we know he was way out of line, but following your logic and your image, his range should be something like QQ+, AQs+, against which you're either crush or flip.

You should definitely work on the mental game and not let a flip crush you like that. 🙂

I once spun a $2.5K package from the 50-cent Power Path on Stars, which was miles above my typical buy-in and way more than I could realistically win. I got it in with KQs, got snap-called by JTs, and he flopped a J... I made my nervous poop cry a little and said I would never play poker again, blabla, I'm done. 😂 But one week later, I was over it.

Just look at your long-term results. If you're a winning player, half a buy-in shouldn't matter. 🙂

I think, its fine to 4-bet jam JJ here for 55BB effective. Especially when you started with such a large 5BB open, because then its almost like, you were only 25-30BB deep, if we compare to a typical online game. One could say, that the opponents 3-betting range should be tighter facing such a large open, but if it contained KQo (which then also called the 4-bet jam), clearly it was not. Just sucks for you, he had two live overcards and not a hand like 99 or AT, which would almost certainly be played the same way.
