Bankroll management is honestly one of the most important skills in poker. A lot of players with good strategy still go broke because they underestimate variance.

There isn’t one “perfect” chart because it depends on the format you play, but these are pretty standard and safe guidelines:

  • Cash games: around 30–50 buy-ins
  • MTTs: around 100–300 buy-ins (variance is huge)
  • Sit & Gos: around 50–100 buy-ins
For example, if you play $10 tournaments seriously, having at least $1,000–$2,000 is much safer long term.

Also:

  • Move down in stakes when your bankroll drops
  • Don’t mix poker money with personal money
  • Track your results and volume
  • Be more conservative if poker isn’t your only income
You can find great bankroll management content on sites like Run It Once, Upswing Poker, and even free YouTube channels. The key is consistency and discipline, not just having a big bankroll.

Use primedope(google it) to estimate the variance effect on different buy ins/runners(field size) for MTT, or cash game simulations and be realistic in your winrates. You should have played at least 100k hands in MTT or Cash game to get somewhat realistic curves. Review the whole calculation and think very conservattive, games are way harder than you think.

Base Rules of Thumb:

50 to 100 Stacks cashgame

200 average buy ins for MTT

300+ buy ins for spins.

My bankroll management is pretty simple. I never spend more than 5% of my bankroll in a session. So if my bankroll is $100, I won't spend more than $5 in one evening.

I played for almost 12 month only the daily freebies on GG. Till now i made 116€ and starting to play 5% of my bankroll, that makes almost every single day a 0,55$ tournament. Also i do win every second day a freebie what makes me profitable in long term. My goal is to reach 500$, then 1000$ and probably after that i will try to reach 10.000$. I'll make some youtube video about it if i ever get to that point.

Bankroll management is essential in online poker because variance can affect even good players. Keeping enough buy-ins for your stakes helps you survive downswings, avoid emotional decisions, and move up in limits safely over the long term.

Go to Gemini or ChatGPT and ask how to build the best bankroll management strategy for yourself. You’ll get an answer tailored specifically to your situation.

Bankroll management is the difference between surviving variance… and going broke.
In online poker, even winning players can lose for weeks.
That’s why smart players don’t just study strategy they protect their bankroll.
Move up too fast? Variance punishes you.
Stay disciplined? You give skill time to win.
Poker is not just about making money.
It’s about staying in the game long enough to realize your edge.

Bankroll management is super important. I don't know the size of your bankroll, but I think it's good practice, for example, with a bankroll of $100 to play tournaments with $0.55 and $1.00 stakes, and with a bankroll of $200 to play in tournaments with $2.00 stakes. I follow this pattern and have been getting results.

There is no single answer to this, but as a simple rule of thumb, you should aim to keep a minimum of 50-100 buy-ins.

Remember though - it doesn't matter how good your bankroll management is, if you're a losing player, you'll always end up broke!

Or at least losing. If you have $1 mio., its pretty tough to lose that amount of money in microstakes games.....

while there isn't one universal chart since it depends on your format, a solid rule of thumb for online poker is to have at least 100 buy-ins for Tournaments (MTTs) and 30-50 buy-ins for Cash Games to handle the variance safely."

Probably not many. But on the other side how many microstakes players actually "go broke" in the literal sense? If your hobby is golf, you are definitely going to spend some money on that, but hopefully this will not mean, you end up "broke". So I guess, my point is, its a bit silly to use this term for anyone other than professional players, who rely on poker income to pay their bills. For everyone else losing just mean, they spend some money on poker, which hopefully they could afford :)

I observe a lot of people's difficulty in tournaments, constant all-in, a lot of impatience on the part of the players
