Whenever I have some money to play, I'm never sure which poker rooms to sign up for or what types of tournaments to participate in.

Avoiding Pokerstars and GG the rest is more playable. Just to avoid sharks. Nothing against them personally.

Hello, colleague. You may already have installed and registered poker rooms. Play where you like and where you win. Good luck in this difficult endeavor.

I never had any luck with online poker rooms in the past 10 years. I would suggest playing live poker. It is more of a hassle to get there, but you see the cards being shuffled and dealt. Nothing against the online rooms, but the amount of bad beats I see online at low stakes have always made me very suspicious. I still play on all the sites, but I just don't put up my own money. I play for fun, mostly freerolls.

I usually choose the poker room based on the quality of the games, tournament schedule, and overall value rather than just the biggest guarantees. I prefer sites with a solid player pool and reasonable fees, then stick to tournaments that fit my bankroll instead of chasing large prize pools. Consistency is more important than constantly switching between rooms. Finding one or two platforms you like and focusing on formats you understand well makes it much easier to improve and manage variance over the long run.

I go by PokerStars and especially GG.
At my level there barely seem to be sharks. Furthermore, GG has by far the most players from almost all over the world. I like to play against players from different continents and cultures. Find it interesting.🤔

Welcome! To answer your question about tournaments: if you have a limited or fresh bankroll, start with Micro-Stakes Freezeouts or 180-man Sit & Gos. Avoid massive fields with thousands of players early on because the variance will crush your bankroll before you can realize your edge. Keep the field sizes small while you build up your comfort level.

I'd recommend playing on sites that aren't quite as crowded, where the average player pool may be a bit softer, such as WPT Global or even CoinPoker. At the same time, make sure you're playing tournaments that fit your bankroll.

Good bankroll management is just as important as choosing the right site. Even if you're a good player, playing above your bankroll can make it very difficult to succeed in the long run.

If you're a beginner, you should only play Freerolls until you learn how to play, that's the best option, other tournaments or cash games you'll only lose money.

Sharks at micro-stakes? Are you serious? A GG room with a large online player, why not? The main thing is, if you're a newbie and an amateur, don't immediately jump to higher limits.

You can spread your bankroll across two or three sites like PokerStars, GG, and 888 and compare how the games and tournaments play out.

As others have said, its depends, what your goals and situation is. And since all poker sites have a wide variety of games and buyins, choosing the right games is definitely far more important than choosing a particular site. For me there are two reasonable ways to play online poker:

1) For fun / recreationally. If this is you, then just play, whatever gives you the most fun within your budget. Maybe mystery bounties are fun, or maybe you prefer a traditional tournament, where you are only trying to place as high as possible. Only you can know this. If your budget for the month is $50, you probably do not want to spend $44 on a single tournament, but this is again completely up to you. An important thing to consider is, how long the tournament will last. If you only want to play for 2-3 hours, you should obviously not sign up for a game, that is expected to last 6 hours.

2) For profit / semiprofessionally. If this is you, you need to study poker strategy and follow bankroll management. And you also need to avoid games with a bad structure and/or high rake. If for instance you choose to play SnGs on PokerStars, then you should definitely focus on 9-32 man On Demand games rather than 9-man games, since the latter have a much higher rake especially in the micros. Even here I would put choise of site fairly low on the list of things to consider at least in the beginning, because unlike, what some have suggested, all sites have beatable microstakes games.
