Whenever I have some money to play, I'm never sure which poker rooms to sign up for or what types of tournaments to participate in.
As others have said, its depends, what your goals and situation is. And since all
poker sites have a wide variety of games and buyins, choosing the right games is definitely far more important than choosing a particular site. For me there are two reasonable ways to play online poker:
1) For fun / recreationally. If this is you, then just play, whatever gives you the most fun within your budget. Maybe mystery bounties are fun, or maybe you prefer a traditional tournament, where you are only trying to place as high as possible. Only you can know this. If your budget for the month is $50, you probably do not want to spend $44 on a single tournament, but this is again completely up to you. An important thing to consider is, how long the tournament will last. If you only want to play for 2-3 hours, you should obviously not sign up for a game, that is expected to last 6 hours.
2) For profit / semiprofessionally. If this is you, you need to study
poker strategy and follow bankroll management. And you also need to avoid games with a bad structure and/or high rake. If for instance you choose to play SnGs on PokerStars, then you should definitely focus on 9-32 man On Demand games rather than 9-man games, since the latter have a much higher rake especially in the micros. Even here I would put choise of site fairly low on the list of things to consider at least in the beginning, because unlike, what some have suggested, all sites have beatable microstakes games.
