PokerStars restricted my account during a $5.50 tournament while I was 1st — Has anyone experienced this? Is compensation possible?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has experienced a PokerStars account restriction during a real-money tournament, particularly involving location security checks, loss of access, and potential compensation.

Here’s what happened:

On October 12, I was playing a $5.50 buy-in tournament on my iphone.

At one point, I was in 1st place with approximately 23,817 chips and 14 players remaining. The advertised first-place prize was around $100.

My phone was running low on battery, and I was having trouble charging it, so I switched to my mother’s laptop to try to continue playing. I used the Opera browser, which apparently had its built-in VPN enabled.

When I tried to log in, PokerStars flagged a location discrepancy and temporarily restricted my account for security reasons. I was physically in Brazil the entire time and had not traveled. I suspect the VPN may have contributed to the location mismatch, although PokerStars has not confirmed the exact cause.

The problem I’m facing now:

PokerStars requested identity and address verification documents, which I submitted. My case is still under review, and support has not provided a clear timeline for resolution.

There is another complication: my registered email address is currently experiencing delivery issues, which I explained to support. However, I’m repeatedly being told that updates will be sent to that same email address.

Meanwhile, I still haven’t received confirmation of my final tournament position or whether any prize money was credited to my account.

This is particularly frustrating because I lost access while sitting in 1st place, with a significant portion of the tournament still to play.

I’d appreciate any advice on some questions:

  1. Has this happened to anyone else? Have you experienced a PokerStars security restriction triggered by a VPN, a device change, or a location discrepancy during a tournament? How long did it take to resolve?
  2. Is compensation possible? Has anyone successfully received a buy-in refund or other compensation after losing access to a tournament because of an account security restriction? I understand that being in 1st place doesn’t guarantee a win, but I’d like to know whether PokerStars reviews these situations.

I have screenshots of the tournament lobby and my support interactions if needed, although I won’t share private account information publicly.

I understand why security checks are necessary, and I’m not suggesting that PokerStars should ignore them. My concern is the lack of a clear resolution process when a restriction occurs during an active tournament, particularly when the player has difficulty receiving the required follow-up emails.

Any similar experiences or practical advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It looks to them like u tried to get another person to finish the tournament for you and so it does look to me. Highly doubt there will be any refund.

Good to know Pokerstars security is still on premium level unlike all the other rooms.

Hey 360desuite, I'm so sorry to hear what happened. I do not use pokerstars but I've had similar issues on Wpt Online. If their customer service is anything like Wpt's, they'll reactivate your account after reviewing your documents but unfortunately, there might not be any compensation for the tournament. Since your account got restricted during play, it would've sat you out the rest of the tournament and you'd have most likely gotten knocked out in further levels. Sorry about that once again and goodluck next time!

Thanks for the support, man! It really sucks to go through this, especially right in the middle of a tournament run. I kind of figured compensation would be a long shot, but I at least hope they resolve the account restriction swiftly once they review my docs. Appreciate you sharing your experience!

dry-hand. I am outraged because it is a platform that traditionally offers little bonus compared to the current market, and yet it was the one where I played the most and deposited money. When you need support and go through it, you totally lose credibility and trust

My account was once restricted for months because of collusion allegations.
It took forever but they cleared me and I got a refund of buyins which I was playing when the restriction sat in.

So anticipate looong waiting time.
2 months or longer won't be unusual unfortunately

Yes but you need to understand that the action you took looks highly suspicious and they had to act. Ghosting (=someone more experienced takes over when a deep run happens) is a big problem, especially where you live. There are threads about it on the 2+2 forum.

They partly cleared you but u got restricted from playing in the same mtts with another member here. Not really interested in getting into this again but please tell the whole story if u start. Stars doesnt do that stuff without reason.

But it is completely irrelevant that a sore loser reported me and Sami in this case lol.
I answered him because he can expect compensation when cleared and has to anticipate long waiting time

A colleague of mine had a similar situation. The problem arose specifically because of the VPN. Restrictions were placed on his account, and he was required to undergo re-verification. The process took about three weeks. Logging in via VPN is strictly prohibited by the rules of most poker sites, and doing so can result in a ban.

Well true but it sounded to me when u said they cleared you that they actually didnt find anything suspicous-which was not the case as they took action with the small restriction.

So i guess it depends from case to case. Pretty sure if someone is completely clean those investigations do not take too long.

Sorry to say that you breached the terms of service (by mistake but still a breach) so compensation isnt likely. You will probably just have been blinded out of the MTT and received whatever the prize was for your final position.

Hope you get it sorted OK

I hate that IP Address is selected to be the ultimate identify verification for any online activity. You can't even do Google searches nowadays without it being based on your IP Address. Type "Korean restaurants" and it just shows the me the asian restaurants in my city, even if they are not Korean.

Everyone, lets boycott IP Address scanning... Who is with me?

It's simply unbelievable. The problem occurred 2 days ago. Besides the financial loss, I still don't have access to my account.

Yes, I think so too. But it's reason enough to, unfortunately, never put money in the room again.

That's simply revolting. Regardless of the size of the room, in the face of so many options on the market today; PokerStars for me has become just another room that doesn't care the least about its users, in the same way it has become just another bad support room for me.

Very sad. I hope you get at least your account back + money based on ICM you had when they restricted your account. I think that is best case scenario. Just try to explain your situation to them and maybe tell them about all your devices and connections then from now on just use those devices and connections only to avoid suspicion. They might take your word for it since this was just a one time thing.

I totally understand. But as soon as everything is clarified on the same day, the documents are sent; everything is done according to protocol and is still not resolved. I simply went through 3-4 generations of different chats explaining the same thing about my email and they all ended the chat saying “Rest assured, we'll send you more information by email”.

Like: Dude, what the hell is that you guys at least read everything I tried to explain exactly now?

It doesn't make sense understand? Hahaha

Well i mean they have to make some research and u cant expect that everything gets resolved in just one day. I would try to forget about it atm and play other sites in the meantime until they answer.

Wish i good luck if there were really no bad intentions. Keep us updated.

Here, you assumed the risk. It is in the General Customer Terms on the website.

"9. Geographical restrictions

9.2
You must not attempt to circumvent any geographical restrictions related to holding or using an Account. To do so would be a serious breach of the General Terms and therefore a Prohibited Event. An attempt at circumvention includes manipulating the information used by us to identify your location (such as by using a VPN) and/or providing us with false or misleading information about your location or place of residence.
"

The company adopts a strict stance to comply with local licensing regulations and prevent geographic fraud. As mentioned above, i highly doubt there will be any refund.

I completely agree with the company's immediate restrictions and blocks. What is making me indignant is the fact that we are already 3-4 days after the event, with my documents duly sent but still without an effective solution.

I'm doing my best, brother, thank you for your words. In the end we'll resolve it somehow, even if it means not using the room anymore! Hugs

Its not only that. Its also, that he began playing the tournament from Brasil, and then suddenly it looked like he was playing from Canada, or whatever location the VPN was set up to show. And since its impossible to travel from Brasil to Canada in a few minutes, this looks like someone else was now playing his account, which is also not allowed. This is a big deal in high-stakes tournaments, where a stable might have a final table specialist or a heads-up specialist to take over from the other players, when they have done the "bread-and-butter" work of getting him there.

PokerStars do not owe him anything for getting blinded out in that $5.5 tournament. The chips went to other players, not PokerStars, and its 100% the fault of OP, that this happened. I once accidentally clicked the 24 hour self exclusion "panic button", which we have here in Sweden, which caused me to blind out in tournaments worth $40 or something. They did not give me any refund for that, nor did I ask for it. My advice to OP is to be patient and polite, cooperate with PokerStars investigation and not even mention anything about the EV he lost by getting blinded out.

Looks like you placed in 8th position for $11.85 (8 paid so you just managed to pop the bubble). The other player on your table (who had the second biggest stack on your table in your screenshot), maaakii placed 7th.

Well at least PokerStars have great security, as we can see from this case, where they instantly restricted your account, when it appeared like, you were letting someone else play from it in the middle of a tournament. By contrast GG Poker recently had a big cheating scandal, where someone hacked into the system and were able to see their equity in the hand, even when they were not all-in. One player was banned and some confiscated money distributed, but there might have been more cases, that they never admitted to.

There is also a site like WPT Global, which apparently does not even catch onto it, when someone living in India or Cambodia use a VPN to pretend to be in Andorra while playing, and likely created multible accounts as well. And there were bot rings operating there, which it took them almost a year to do something about. So I am pretty happy to play on a site, where security actually do, what security is supposed to do. But of course it sucks, when you are the one coming under investigation, because you inadvertently logged on via a VPN in the middle of a tournament.

Well thats at least something, and nobody know, how he would have done, if he had still been sitting in. Being the chip leader with 14 left does not mean, we are going to win the tournament. Its also possible, he would have run KK into AA, lost most of his chips and then lost the rest in another hand sending him out of the tournament without even cashing. So as I said already, he should not expect or even discuss compensation. If they give him something, thats an act of courtesy, because they think, he is a good costumer and want to keep him happy.
