It’s almost here, my favorite time of year. Cool fall Saturdays filled with friends, family, beer, and Mountaineer football!

The season opener is this Saturday and I can’t wait. I’ll start on Friday night with the preparations. Pack the car with tailgate gear. Make the pepperoni rolls. Lay out tickets for the game. Try to sleep.

Saturday morning I’ll get up at 6AM, and ready myself and the kid. We’ll be out the door by 6:30 and will have the whole crew (2 adults, 3 kids) picked up and on our way by 7. We’ll hit Morgantown just about 9AM, quick stop at Kroger for some brats or burgers for the grill, beer and soda for the cooler, and be in our tailgate spot by 9:30, a quick 2.5 hours before kickoff (not a fan of the noon kick).

After we get everything setup, the kids (ages 4, 13, and 14) will throw the football, play cornhole, or watch TV while the grown-ups drink a few beers, catch-up with our tailgate neighbors, and get ready to cook. Food will be out on the table by 11AM and by 11:30 we’ll be heading toward the stadium to ensure being in our seats for the band and team entrance. Sometime just before noon the Mountaineer will fire his musket in the air as the announcer says, “Let’s bring on the Mountaineers!” and the crowd goes wild. The next 3 hours will determine how the rest of the day goes. A victory and the tailgate will go for 2 or 3 hours after the game (although since I’m driving this week there will be no beers after the game kicks for me). A defeat and we’ll be out of town an hour later. Game 1 should be a sure victory over a lower division opponent (a cupcake opener) but nothing is ever guaranteed and sometimes strange things happen.

With a win and good traffic we’ll have everyone dropped off and be home by 9PM just in time for the kid and me to go to bed completely exhausted. Another great Saturday of Mountaineer football will be behind us with 2 weeks to count down before the next home game.

Is it Saturday yet?

It does sounds like loads of fun! I wish I could find a college team to love. 🙁

UGA and GT both have great gameday atmospheres. Not sure about Georgia State. Surly you have a friends that go to one or the other? If so just tag along for the tailgate and skip the game if you can't grab a cheap ticket.

So this Saturday is the first games of ncaa football? its less pumped up here in Canada but I love watching and betting on it ,have to get to afew games definitely want to go to south bend and watch an Irish game.

Our neighbors and friends are hardcore UGA fans - both graduated from there. We are planning a trip to Athens for a game with them. They claim I will be hooked after that lol.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were. So much fun.

I'm coming to Atlanta this time next year to see the Mountaineers open next season with Alabama in the Georgia Dome. I love it.

Go to the Jacksonville game and put on some orange and blue!!! Then you will surely get hooked (one way or the other). There is nothing like it there, you get a split right down the middle of blue on one side and red/black on the other. A sight that must be seen at least once!

I am lucky enough to be close to the local stadium here and they open up on Friday. I cannot wait! Sucks I have to work all day (might try to talk the boss into leaving at 4, we will see) but I plan on being at the parking lot by 6:30 PM and walking to the stadium at 7:55 PM. Solid hour plus to down as many beers as possible to watch the U(niversity of Miami) take on a, how WV puts it, lesser opponent. Then I get to wake up and watch my Alma mater Florida play a much lesser opponent.

This is the best time of the year and I have goose bumps just thinking about it.

Best thing (worst thing?), my two schools play each other week 2 😀 😕 😕 😱 🙄 Will be rooting for my school but will have a great time either way!

C'mon Gators, get up and go!:dancing: 😀 😀 😀

Grew up in sunny south Florida and the University of Miami is the team down here. My dad's uncle also coached for the team in the 70's, he left soon after to coach high school (which is as big as most college football in some areas) and was inducted into the high school coaches hall of fame. So from birth until I went off to college it was that team. But how could I not root for my own school once I got to the University of Florida? Not to mention that you don't have much of a choice but to fall in love with SEC football when you get to see it first hand.... almost failed every fall I was there. 😀

To make it even harder to believe, the teams hate each other. My dad taught me from a young kid to root for two teams each week, the Miami Hurricanes and whoever plays the Florida Gators....

He still has only worn a UF shirt once, when I got my masters in transportation engineering.

Yeah, I knew they hated each other, that's why I asked. We Mountaineers have a saying that we'd rather have a sister in the whore house than a brother at Pitt. 🙂

Probably the same group who go to the games (although the kids might or might not come) + my brother who lives in Marietta. Hopefully JoeBob's Bama lovin ass will be there. Maybe you and Joe can get some tix and we'll just have a CC tailgate.

We had a great time the last time the Mountaineers played in the Georgia Dome (the year the Sugar Bowl was there due to Hurricane Katrina), so we're all looking forward to coming back.

That would be fun - I know Joe would love it. We will plan on it - warn us when we need to get tickets to make sure we get some.

I assume you will stay at your brother's house - but you are welcome to stay at ours if not. (3 spare bedrooms)

Sounds great. I'm sure we will stay with my brother but I do appreciate the offer.

The tickets won't go on sale until next spring but they shouldn't be hard to come by since it requires both teams fans to travel (obviously not as far for Bama fans). I do know that the game will be on Saturday, August 30th (Labor Day weekend). I'd say the odds are pretty good that it will be a 7pm game.

I watch the NFL but nothing beats being at a college football game. It's the atmosphere. The traditions. The 100 year rivals. The co-eds!!

2 days until I get to see 60k of my closest friends. 🙂

You just don't get this watching the NFL.

This is what I mean at the UF v UGA game in Jax
