Is poker a sport?

It only offends couch potatoes who have never been fit and athletic in their lives that they need to justify poker as a sport so that they feel that they're doing something physical with their lives.

He also brings up good point. Put Poker into the olympics. Main Event winner must be the best player in the world then if poker is a sport. 2013's best baseball team is Boston Red Sox. Miami Heat is the best basketball team of 2013. Baltimore Ravens is the best football team in 2013. So if poker is a sport, then I guess Ryan Reiss is the best poker player of 2013. Ryan Reiss must be the greatest poker athlete of this year. LOL.

Poker is the only game where dumbest person can win and get rewarded regardless of how horrible his decision was. I guess he worked hard to win that pot since he was sweating to win the pot. All that adrenaline for that suckout card to hit must've been quite a workout. LOL.
 
I have answered this kind of question before.But now I think it depends on how you play it.
 
YESSSSSSSSSSSS I love this thread im giving a 10 min persuasive speech in a public speaking course in a couple weeks on persuading people that poker is not just a sport, but the most popular sport of our era! ( past 10 years)

should be a fun speech to write!

If that's how you're gonna give persuasive speech in public speaking just by saying poker is a sport without any reason, I suggest picking a different topic. You can use me as a test to see how good your persuasive speech is. You can practice on me. If you can persuade me and prove to me that poker is a sport, then you'll do well in your public speaking course. Otherwise, find a different topic for your course because you won't Ace it.
 
it's sport if u work a lot, it's sport if u are reading books , making your playing better, it's sport for your minds, that's why I think, poker is sport game!

Yes it feels really like a sport playing online poker. You have to be qualified and concentrated. It feels like a mental exercise.
 
YEA!!!! POKER IS A SPORT GAME. I called off 50bb to 3 all-ins in front of me with 49o and flopped trips 4s against AA, AKs, and 99. It was such a great workout because knowing how badly I put my chips in heavily underdog, I was sweating hard to win and it paid off. What a sport and a great workout. I need Gatorade to make up the sweat loss from my body. 🙂
 
I have to say no. Poker is not a sport, nor is it a game of skill. (not saying that skill isn't involved).Poker is gambling, skill helps you determine your odds but once the chips are on the table its all up to the luck of the draw. So you put you money in and hope for the best and for me that's not a sport.
 
I agree with you bluesfan luck plays a big roll in it. and knowing what to play and how to play it helps a great deal also.
 
there is a movement around the world but mainly in italy that is going to bring to the olimpic comitee next year a formal request to include poker in the olimpic games, so yes probably will be considered sonn an sport and maybe next olimpic games in brazil we could see matches between canada against usa (negranu vs ivey??) or maybe in the women side we´ll see germany against netherlands (vanessa selbst against liv boere???) well i think everybody here is waiting for that
 
if you can sit on your ass for 6 hours and do it I don't think its a sport :hmmmm:
 
I think music requires more athleticism than poker. :thrasher: :flute: :musicus: But I think of poker as a mental sport. :albertein

a game can last more than 1 day, and yet it is considered a mental sport.
then why not poker?
 
Talking Olympics, they call them the winter games and summer games. Is curling in the Olympics a sport? I feel like Poker is a mentally skilled game. If curling is considered a sport than I think Poker is as well.

because chess is only about skill , there is no luck involved in chess.

While in poker with the skill , luck is involved big time. so it is just a game, but a very good mental game
