I was athletic all my life…as a Canadian, after breakfast, you took your hockey stick and disappeared down the street playing street hockey until there was no light left. I played football, soccer and was on the wrestling team in high school…I became a runner in my 30s, running in 10 km races every year. After work I ran on the track at the university 3 days a week…which actually saved my life…in order to get more oxygen to my muscles, my body created alternate routes (small capillaries), which provided enough blood to the heart when one of my major arteries was 100% blocked. I had been fairly sedentary after my son was born and did not have a great diet. At the age of 56, I had a triple bypass. I started walking 3 miles 5 days a week for several years. In my 70s now I was walking 3 miles 3 days a week until a few months ago when I started suffering from sciatica…an MRI shows that I shall require back surgery. I delayed surgery until October so we can provide daycare for my grandchildren and be available to help with our third grandchild who decided to make his appearance 6 weeks early.
I should get back to walking again because carrying an extra 30 lbs. will not help my recovery.
I am 73 years old, but I believe in staying active and in shape…I intend to live long enough to see my grandchildren become teenagers.
