As tournaments get closer to the money, I start thinking more about payouts and laddering up.

But I’ve heard some players ignore payouts and just focus on making the best decisions.

Do you adjust your play based on payouts or not really?

I consider payouts a little, but I still play to maximize my chips most of the time.

It will depend on the tournament structure and payouts...
At these times, ICM pressure tends to be higher, so pay attention to other tables and players who are about to be eliminated.

It's usually during these moments that we stop playing for chip ev and pick up the pace for ICM mode.

Yes, I do pay attention to payouts, but I approach them differently depending on the stage of the tournament.
In the early stage, I barely think about payouts. I focus on playing +EV, building my stack, and I’m not too worried about busting.
On the bubble, I start to consider pay jumps. If I have a medium or short stack, I may play more cautiously to make it into the money. If I have a big stack, I apply pressure on opponents since they are afraid of busting.
After making it into the money, I loosen up a bit. Many players relax at this point, and I try to take advantage of that, but I still keep an eye on significant pay jumps.
At the final table, payouts become very important for me. I take ICM into account, understanding that chip value is not equal to cash value. Sometimes I may even fold a strong hand if the risk of elimination is too high. Or, on the contrary, I apply pressure if I’m the chip leader.
In the end, I don’t play “for the money” directly — I play for chips, but I adjust my decisions when payouts start to matter a lot.

Most of the time, I only pay attention close to the bubble. Once I’m already in the money, I only check again if I get close to the final table. I just try to play my best.

Guy, before even getting to the money is precisely the phase where I adopt a more conservative approach.

This is the crucial phase, which determines whether I will make any money, therefore extra attention is needed.

In the phase leading up to the bubble, there are many short-stacked players and players are very likely to go all in.

I increase my caution in the phase leading up to the bubble.

In this phase, the blinds are very valuable.🤑

It’s just the human tendency of keeping one eye on the payouts structure!
Though you should entirely stick to your style while playing the tournament, once the late registration period ends, knowing where you’re standing helps you to calculate the risk factor!

Finishing fourth is not the same as finishing ninth; the difference in pay is enormous. But there's a reality: there are bills you have to pay no matter what, even if you don't want to. I've been struggling for four months without even submitting a payment request. 🤣

This is a very important part of poker, analyzing when the prize is coming and seeing the amount of chips your opponents have, this way you can decide how to play to reach the prize in the best way possible.

I only keep track to see if there are any pay jumps. Then, only at the final table do I focus more on that.

This is something you need to understand from the beginning. There is a big difference in how you need to play if the tourney only pays 1 or if the tourney pays half the field. The ICM of the tourney will impact how you should play the entire tourney.

You should but not in the way most people do.
Staring at the payout ladder every few minutes can make you play scared, tightening up just to “lock up” the next jump. That mindset kills long-term profit. But completely ignoring payouts isn’t the answer either.
The key is awareness without fear. Understand where you are bubble, pay jumps, final table and adjust strategically, not emotionally. Sometimes it means applying pressure when others are tightening up. Other times it means avoiding marginal spots when the risk outweighs the reward.
Payouts are part of the game. Use them as information, not as a reason to abandon your edge.

I'm always thinking about payouts. What's the point of playing poker for real money if you don't think about it?

Even if i do that i almost never care about possibly laddering up ...

As long as min cash is secured then after that it doesnt matter whether i'm next one out or survive a bit longer ...

Hello, I do not look at the prize places, it prevents me from playing with pleasure and making the right decisions, I can lose for one position from the prize place. I am very discouraged by players who deliberately delay the game in order to wait for a prize place.

I think the financial reward is always there, but that shouldn't reduce the quality of the game.

In the later stages I start paying attention to payouts. Mostly it is because too many elements on the screen or constant checking from some menu is not good for my focus. But as the game progresses I need to consider consider the payouts.
