Is Patience the Most Important Skill in Tournament Poker?

Hello everyone!
As a beginner, I've started to realize that tournament poker isn't only about getting good cards. Patience seems to be one of the most important skills.
Sometimes I can go many hands without playing, waiting for the right opportunity. It can feel boring, especially in freerolls where many players go all-in with almost any two cards. However, I believe staying disciplined is more profitable in the long run.
I'm trying to focus on making good decisions instead of chasing action.
What do you think is more important in tournaments: patience, aggression, or experience
I'd love to hear your opinions and learn from your experience.

I think all three are important, but for someone just starting out, I would say that patience makes the difference. Waiting for the right moment and avoiding the temptation to rush prevents many mistakes. Aggression is also key, but at the right time; it's not about playing a lot of hands, but about playing well the ones you choose.

I completely agree that timing is very important. As a beginner, I sometimes feel tempted to play hands just because I've been folding for a long time. I'm learning that patience doesn't mean playing scared—it means waiting for situations where I have an advantage.
That's one of the biggest lessons I'm trying to learn right now. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

This is not a one point answer. It don´t has to be boring becasue you can observe other people´s play habbits (this is a must for experience).
Watching people doing things can be very interesting.
Tournament poker is the mixture of all 3 elements you mentioned: patience and aggression at the right time is sometimes a matter of experience.

I agree with all these points, it is very important to be watching the table to be able to make adjustments to each player. You want to be watching and thinking how do I get diferent players chips with strategy not just cards.

If you are doing that you will never be bored.

In my opinion, patience is the most important skill in tournaments. Many players lose chips because they get bored and try to force action. Waiting for good opportunities and staying disciplined can make a huge difference in the long run. Of course, aggression and experience are also important, but without patience, it is difficult to use those skills effectively.

Patience is key! If your VPIP goes into the double digits you are playing like a MADMAN I say! A madman!

Also don't forget to jam your entire stack no matter how deep you are over a 2.2 BB open. That is freeroll theory optimal according to the solvers.

I think so; patience is key for both tournament and cash game players across all formats. Sometimes we want quick results—like getting premium hands constantly in tournaments—but I believe we need to know how to wait and play using our own resources; that way, we’ll achieve different results.

Absolutely right...all three...having just one of those traits would be like having a hamburger without fries and a Coke.

Patience is for sure an important skill for tournament poker, and also the ability to maintain focus for many hours, if you play traditional slow MTTs with 10 minute or so blind intervals. I have often seen someone play solid for a long time only to then suddenly start to donk away their chips, when its down to shorthanded play on the final table after 5-6 hours.

The solution to boredom is to play more tables, so you always have something to keep you busy, even when you are card dead in one of your games. This require, that you make a deposit and forget this idea about "building a bankroll through freerolls". As I have written elsewhere, this is a bad plan for several different reasons, this being one of them.

The key to winning poker tournaments is matching the aggressiveness of your play to your stack size: play cautiously and conserve your chips in the early stages, become selectively aggressive in the middle stages, and attack the blinds and short-stacked players in the late stages.

I have to agree that patience is an underrated poker skill in general, but especially important for (long/slow structure) tournaments because the room for errors/mistakes is way lower in MTTs compared for example cash games... the other skills mentioned are important too - the experience will come by playing and the aggression factor, if you think you're not aggressive enough in certain spots, similarly will be fixed by sitting at the tables and/or getting comfortable at the stakes you usually play...

I think patience is a crucial factor in poker. I often see players with 15 big blinds get desperate and start wasting their chips when they get any two cards; in my opinion, patience is exactly what it takes to build up the stack after waiting for a strong hand and the right situation.
