I think one of the biggest challenges for beginners in tournament poker is learning patience and understanding that every hand does not need to be played.

Many new players enter too many pots, ignore position, or become frustrated when they lose a big hand. In tournaments, especially freerolls, it can be tempting to play aggressively all the time, but making better decisions and waiting for the right opportunities can make a big difference.

I am still learning and trying to improve my own game, so I would like to hear from more experienced players:

What do you think is the biggest mistake beginners make in tournament poker, and what advice would you give to someone trying to improve?

The single biggest mistake beginners make in tournament poker is playing every stage of the tournament the same way.

I think the biggest mistake is playing too many hands. I made this mistake when I started. I wanted to see every flop. Now I'm learning to be more patient and only play good hands, especially from early position. This has already helped me make better decisions in tournaments.

I think one of the biggest mistakes bad players make is calling a large raise from out of position pre flop with mediocre hands. They don’t realize they are being targeted with a large isolation bet. Good players will go bigger for value vs these players knowing they will call no matter how big they go. Now the bad player is forced to defend a bad hand out of position in a bloated pot. Then they wonder where their chips went and blame bad luck.

Limping and limp-calling way too wide, trying to play cards and build a hand. It's a complete waste of money.
