What is the biggest mistake beginners make in MTTs?

I’ve been playing more MTTs recently, mostly freerolls and low buy-in tournaments, and I’m curious what you guys think is the biggest mistake beginners make.
For me, it’s probably playing too many hands early in the tournament. A lot of players seem to treat the first levels like they have to win every pot, and they end up losing a big part of their stack with weak hands.
I think being patient and waiting for good spots is much more important, especially when the tournament has a long structure.
What do you think is the biggest mistake new MTT players make?

For me, the biggest mistake is playing too many hands just because you’re bored or want to build a stack quickly. MTTs reward patience, and there will always be another spot if you’re willing to wait.

I agree with that. I think boredom is especially dangerous in freerolls because players often feel like they have nothing to lose. I sometimes catch myself playing hands just because I haven’t seen good cards for a while. Patience is definitely something I need to work on.

For me, it's about keeping my emotions in check. I always lose the hands where getting upset affects my all-in decisions.

They overestimate their knowledge of the game , their capabilities . Or they might believe a lot in the idea that it's a game of luck , in [be end [beir turn to win will come . They underestimate the broken rng .

I think one of the biggest mistakes is playing too many hands early and then becoming too attached to marginal hands. Patience is really important in MTTs

I think the biggest mistake bad players make is limping and calling with way too wide of a range. Most of those hands need to hit the muck but they are being played and getting dominated. Better players realize this, so they up the price pre flop just to see how high bad players will pay and call with their crappy hands. Then they just get value owned and wonder where all their chips went. They limp too much, call too much, chase too much and just never fold.
Good players identify these mistakes, choose the profitable exploits, and execute correctly.

For me, one big mistake is playing the tournament with the same strategy from start to finish. Beginners often look at their chip count instead of thinking in big blinds. 40k chips can be a big stack at one point and a short stack later. I think learning when to change gears as the blinds go up is a huge part of becoming a better MTT player.

I also think beginners play too many hands. There are even those who play absolutely everything, because they believe poker is, to some extent, a game of bingo.

In the free version of GTO Wiz, you can check what your preflop rank should be based on your position and stack size, and as your game improves, you can change that too — but I wouldn't stick to it letter by letter. As a beginner, I think the GTO defends too broadly and 3-inserts in certain situations.

As a beginner i think my mistake was not playing enough hands..i used to wait for monster hands only and didn`t bluff enough..

I’d say playing too many hands is definitely one of the biggest mistakes. New players often underestimate how valuable patience is in MTTs. Another big one is ignoring position and stack sizes when making decisions.
