I think it's just a good point of reference to monitor your progress in a tournament. If you can stay at the average chip stack throughout a tournament then you can make the final table.

I always try to have more than the average stack size but other than that I don't care what that actual number means lol

Hi
Good observation
Average stack size as mentioned by many actually helps gauge your standing in the tournament.
I use the information most of the time including other information stated along side like no.of players etc...

I thought average stack size was determined by the total of all who is playing devided by the number or players. If this is so, could this be why the average stack isn't always the middle amount being played?

Obviously you can see it in the lobby of every tournament - but I've noticed that the average stack size is never actually the median stack size: having an average size stack realistically puts you in the top 25-20% of players in that tournament (in my experience). So what are we supposed to do with that information?

Should you be aiming to have an average size stack, or do players with above average size stacks often do better? What does this number mean and how should it affect my strategy?

You can NOT win a tournament being average...lol

By definition you can only win a tournament by being superior.

For me it is just a number....just a gauge…...another analytic....in this case - describing the mean.

I want to stay above this mean stack size. Or at least track it closely.

Yes, I would say that above average size stacks often do better.

Good luck !
