What is your strategy for freerolls?

Hi everyone, I have a question for the more experienced tournament players here. When playing a freeroll, do you prefer to play aggressively from the beginning and build a big stack, or play more carefully during the early levels? I sometimes find it difficult to decide when to take risks because the early stages can be quite unpredictable. What approach works best for you?

Every freeroll I play I am more aggressive at the beginning to try to accumulate as many chips as possible. However, I think freerolls are very bingo because people go all in with any hand. You need to have a little bit of luck.

I like to play one higher buy in tournament as my main focus and have a few freerolls running on the side. I take the higher buy in seriously and make disciplined decisions, but if I feel the need to punt, gamble, or try something overly ambitious, I get it out of my system in a freeroll instead.

It keeps me entertained without letting boredom or frustration ruin the tournament that actually matters. Freerolls are also useful for practising different strategies, handling huge fields, and getting experience playing short stacked. I still try to win them, of course, but I am much more willing to experiment and take risks when none of my bankroll is on the line.

I try to stay patient in freerolls and avoid getting involved in too many unnecessary pots early on.
Once the field gets smaller, I become more aggressive and look for good spots to build my stack.
For me, survival first, pressure later. 🎯

ultra agresive start
play safe and collect small stacks with loose hands .. afoid big pots aginst big stacks....
ft try to ladder as much posible play safe ...

For me, it depends a lot on the blind structure. If the blinds are going up quickly, I tend to play more aggressively because there isn’t much time to wait for premium hands. If the blinds increase slowly, I prefer to be more patient and wait for better spots. I also think the size of the starting stack matters. With a deeper stack and a slow structure, there’s no need to rush. You have time to observe the table, understand how the other players are behaving, and wait for good opportunities. In a fast structure, however, waiting too long can leave you with a small stack before you even realize it. So I don’t think there is one approach that works for every freeroll. I try to adjust my game to the structure of the tournament rather than simply deciding to be aggressive or passive from the beginning. For me, the key is knowing how much time I have before the blinds put pressure on my stack.

General freerolls are full of stupid players, so you'll get a LOT OF bad beats. So, if you are not a patient person, try do double-triple it and after that, play tought.

Treat freerolls like real tournaments, so I don’t play overly tight early.
Look for good spots to apply pressure and build a stack while avoiding unnecessary high-variance situations.
As the blinds increase, adjust and become more aggressive when the situation calls for it.

In freerolls, I focus on patience + aggression.
Play solid early, avoid unnecessary spots, then turn up the pressure when the stacks get deeper. The goal is to survive without playing scared and capitalize when the big opportunities come.

I don't think there should be a strategy for freerolls. I think strategy starts when the tournament has gone far

Hi Saikgila,
Agreeing with various replies hereup; strat when tournament in final table. 'Luck balanced' Allins in early rounds with possible addon to top it.; repeat. Most am players are up range 2,5$ -5$ stakes.

I usually prefer a tighter approach early in freerolls. There’s no need to risk a big part of your stack with marginal hands when many players are willing to gamble. As the field gets smaller and the blinds increase, I gradually become more aggressive and look for good spots to build my stack.
