Honestly, the 'rags to riches' dream is beautiful but it can also be dangerous if you're not careful. I've seen players chase that dream and go broke chasing it.
I've built a bankroll from scratch myself. Nothing glamorous — I started at the lowest micro stakes tournaments online, grinding slowly and making plenty of mistakes along the way. But that grind taught me more than any poker book ever could.
My simple rules that actually worked:
Never put more than 2-3% of your bankroll into a single tournament. It sounds boring, but it keeps you alive during the bad runs — and bad runs always come.
Don't rush the move up in stakes. I moved up too early once, ran bad, and had to start over. That lesson cost me money but was worth it.
As for timeline — be honest with yourself. Going from $50 to $1,000 took me close to a year of consistent play. Anyone who
tells you it's faster is either very lucky or not telling the full story.
The
wsop Main Event is the dream. But for most of us, the real win is becoming a better player along the way. The $10,000 buy-in will come eventually if you stay disciplined.
Just don't forget to enjoy the journey.
