Ok ok CC - This was meant to be a joke but yes i should ahve followed up with > bankroll management is one of the many disciplines of becoming a successful poker player and should be respected and understood aswell as you can. That means working out how you can build a bankroll from $0 by playing freerolls like CC have to offer if thats what you would like to do and then furthermore what should you do when you do get some real $ to play games with. It has been suggested to play with as many as 100 buyins for $1 games and even more say 200x or 350x for turbos and hypers - it might seem like a lot but when you play volume and good solid poker and experience the variance that can occcur AT ANY TIME then im sure you will come to understand bankroll management a bit more and how important it is. Good luck with the journey and have fun building that roll!

I've built numerous bankrolls through the years. I've started from scratch with freerolls online, small deposits, built live bankrolls from small buy ins and even had a friend buy me into a game one time because I didn't want to play, but they wanted me to come along.

Currently I have been re-building a bankroll on Global and BetOnline. BetOnline has been solely through promotions and such and playing small stakes PLO8 with a smattering of MTTs. I made a $30 deposit on Global and I've cashed out 4 times. Eventually I got down to $7. With their daily bankroll boosts and rakeback, I've managed to get up to 20 full buy-ins at my preferred game there-10PLO8. I've played a few SNGs and a few MTTs and boosted with both.

My plan would be very simple. I’m convinced that the simpler the plan, the better the chances of achieving your goal. I’d simply play in freerolls and build up my funds month by month. That way, in 1–2 years’ time, you could potentially have a decent sum that would allow you to continue growing and developing.

At first glance it seems that it is very simple, let's say you have a bankroll of $200 and you ideally want to play tournaments for no more than $2, but most people are greedy creatures, so very often people here make mistakes and start entering tournaments for more money in the hope of winning something because they are sure that they are strong players and now they definitely win, or they make rebets on a small number of large blinds.

I believe that with just freerolls it is possible to build a very comfortable bench. I would do it that way, just like I did and I know it's possible. So avoid putting money out of your own pocket!

I’d definitely recommend beginning with low-stakes Sit & Go’s. Great for beginners because the structure is simple, the fields are small, and you get a lot of repetition in key spots like push/fold and short-stack play. You can start with the lowest buy-ins and move up slowly once you have around 50–100 buy-ins for the next level. It’s not the fastest path, but it’s a very controlled way to grow a bankroll while learning solid fundamentals.

My preferred ones are actually Heads-UP SnGs but many rooms do not offer them, and traffic got really low. But still possible to find them.

At the same time, I would play good freerolls, not so many, but specially those who offer good value. For me makes not too much sense to play $50 freerolls with thousands of players. Unless you are an absolute beginner just to feel how a tournament is played, but even then, maybe better to deposit a good amount and start playing SnGs in any format up to 45 players seems good.

The fastest way to build a roll is to invest in your brain first. Spend 2 hours studying for every 4 hours you play. If you improve your skill, your 'win rate' increases, which means your bankroll grows exponentially faster.

hi folks,

i have to say that building a meaningful bankroll is hard work and i would say it is a journey(like a long tourney ;-).
2 things you need at least, patience and endurance to make it a good journey - it is like a process with up and downs.

I prefer freerolls and tourneys with buy ins under 15$, also cash games with micro stakes can help to build a solid bankroll.
If there is a promotion with poker tickets or free bets in sports i take the chance to boost my bankroll a bit faster but you have to stay calm all the time.
Dont try to play higher levels when you feel not confortable with it. Sometimes it is quite helpful to take a break for a week or longer to get fresh again for the table.

You can build it up with CC tournaments,
when you win some of them or get more often in Top 3 and you have around 200 buyins
start with playing 1 USD tournaments and count your wins separately from Cardschat winners,

when your result of 100 tournaments is positive try the next buyin, besides fill it up again with CC freerolls, if you aren`t good enough already to beat the 1 USD tournaments..

If you loose too many of the 2 USD games go back to 1 USD,--> step by step

The truth is, most successful bankrolls are built slowly and boringly.
The players who try to spin it up fast usually just reset to zero.

Have you ever successfully built a bankroll?
Yes, and only by playing free rolls.
nabmom said:
What would you include in a plan to increase your bankroll?
It wouldn't include anything; I would continue playing the way I've always played.
nabmom said:
What types of games?
What I like most is MTT and Spin Go.
nabmom said:
Over how long a period? How risky would your plan be?
The time depends on my availability.

Zero risk, since I don't intend to play in any major events or become a professional, the risk would be zero; may many more freerolls come.

"Find games you can beat and play them a ton".
I'll start with repeating this Johnatan Little" quote, because I am truly convinced it is crucial.

So, following this advice, my recipe for building a bankroll would be to find the stakes you beat. Let's say, for online poker (most probably 80-90% of poker players are online players these days) it would be 2NL. Play it a lot, note how much are you able to earn. If it goes very well, try out higher stakes, let's say 5NL. Play for some time and compare if your profits are higher than at 2NL. If they are, keep grinding and try to go higher after some time. If they are not, go back to 2NL and work on improving your game.

In my opinion, to do the above, amateur players do not need any specific target-numbers like 30 buins or whatever. Of course, you need to track and measure your results, you can set yourself some kind of target, but let's be serious - as long as your main source of income is not poker it does not really matter if you deposit $200 or $20 to play micros. If you loose your $20 you can always deposit next $20. Just keep it under control.

If you still struggle to beat NL2, I'd recomend not to go higher and keep learning while minimising your loses. You can also play freerolls to learn and improve your game for free.

Not sure if it was intended to be some kind of joke, or what? ;)
It's a theoretical mathematical model, of course it has nothing to do with real life.
In real life, if you are a winning player at some stakes, whenever you try to increase stakes you play, you very quickly come to the point you just stop winning and start loosing.

Building a bankroll doesn’t have to be a dramatic “zero to hero” storyit’s usually about discipline and consistency. I’ve found (and seen others succeed) by starting at low-stakes games, focusing on solid fundamentals, and reinvesting profits rather than taking big shots too early.
A good plan would include strict bankroll management (like 20–50 buy-ins depending on the game), sticking to formats you’re strongest in (cash games or small-field tournaments), and gradually moving up over a few months. Low to mid-stakes online games or local tournaments are ideal starting points.
The key is keeping risk controlled avoid chasing losses or jumping stakes too fast. Slow, steady growth with good decision-making beats high-risk swings almost every time.

I am a recreational player. I build my bankroll using a set amount of money each month that my husband and I agree I can use for poker. This bankroll gives me the freedom to play whatever events I want to that fit within my budget. I track my buy ins and any wins so I can know my current status (in the red or in the black). I hope that someday my wins will feed the bankroll instead of my budgeted amount, but I do not want to feel any pressure.

The possibilities to build up a bankroll still exist. If you want to start from zero, the CC freerolls are a great way to win 100-200 dollars in a short time.

Personally, I am currently trying to build a bankroll with Spins on 888. Starting with 0.10 Spins. I play these until I have $50 in winnings and then move up to 0.50 Spins. At $200, to 1 Dollar Spins, and at $400 or $500 to 2 Dollar Spins. Let's see if I can manage it. Currently, after 2,694 spins with a stake of 0.10 dollars, I have won 22 dollars.

I would approach this in two ways and set a time limit of 2 years max.
Freerolls and 50c tourneys small handed turbos.
I once managed to get to $654 from 0 just doing this in 10 months when i started out and i wasnt playing as much as i could have.
Its hard work and you have to dedicate yourself to it.

I’ve built a bankroll before, and honestly the biggest shift wasn’t some magic strategy, it was discipline and time. I didn’t go the all-in ladder route, instead I treated it like a slow investment. I started at very low stakes, mostly soft field MTTs and some low-stakes cash to reduce variance, and focused on volume + consistency. The key part of the plan was strict bankroll management, never risking more than a small % per session, even when I felt confident. Growth was gradual, over a few months, not days. I avoided high-variance formats early (like spins or hypers) and only added them later with a separate roll. The risk level was intentionally low, because the goal wasn’t to get rich fast, it was to not go broke. For me, bankroll building is less about big wins and more about surviving long enough for your edge to compound.

I've made a few 0 to different amounts challenges in the past(nothing major though, usually ~ $100) and like other members said discipline and patience are the most important as if you're already on the CC community reading this thread- it means you have a pretty good poker game/knowledge to constantly beat the field in freerolls and/or very low buy-in games... I still believe 888 poker is the best site to start as it offers a lot of daily freerolls and many are for different communities- the best community games are from CC as the password isn't usually shared and it's not that tough to make it ITM a few times every week/month to get a good start... decent bankroll management is very important too as you see so many times players going back to 0 right after making something decent from a freeroll/low buy-in game, so picking the right games and having a good plan from the start will be also very important for this kind of challenge!

I think the best way to build a solid bankroll is to start with small stakes and proper bankroll management.
It’s important not to risk too much in one game and stay disciplined.
Also, freerolls can be a good start for beginners. Step by step, with patience and learning from mistakes, it’s possible to grow a bankroll over time.

Low money tournaments are the base of my bankroll. If I reach 50$, a withdrawal is the next step, because I don`t want to be a part of high level tournaments. I play poker only for the game, not for money.

Building a robust bankroll is a task for few, in my opinion. Besides discipline, study, and patience, an investment in study material is required.
Poker is a complex game with many nuances; after all, if it were easy, everyone would succeed.
I believe that the main factor is studying the game.
