Invest what you can afford to loose. As it is gambling, poker is an addictive hobby. The upswing of winning is thrilling & the downswing of losing is frustrating that one is highly tempted to invest more & more to recover the losses & hope to breakeven. Without control, losses in the long term affects financial situations, mental health & even relationships.

Invest what you can afford to loose. Do not chase the losses as a player just starting a poker journey. Play for fun & if the lucky stars line-up properly, perhaps there could be something at the end of the rainbow.

Best advice would be to go for a tigth style at first and take your spot when they come and slowly open ur game and your range the more you get confortable.

I think that the most important things for a beginner to understand are:

1) Bankroll management of course. Without proper bankroll management poker is just gambling against variance.
2) All decision for profitable play are made over the long run. If you lost to a rare cooler it doesn't necessary mean that your play was bad. If you folded T2o and the flop was TT2 it also didn't mean that you should have called with that. Sometimes you need to lose in the moment to win overall. And the opposite is correct too: if you (or someone) won some money, it doesn't necessary mean that the play was good and is going to be profitable in the long run.

And also you need to send the beginner to learn GTO, meanwhile explaining that GTO is not a panacea, but it is also needed as a baseline to understand exploits.

Part of what makes CardsChat such a great place to visit is that we provide so much information to new players. What do you think is the most important advice to offer someone just starting out? What will help them love and appreciate the game? What is essential for them to know so that they can succeed?

For me, at least one of the most important lessons I can offer is to remember to have fun at the table. Life is short and often full of surprises. We need to enjoy what we do, as often as we can. So don't forget to breathe and have fun! That's why it is called a game of poker!

A few things:

First - don't play freerolls. They'll teach you all the wrong things.​

Second - don't take advice from anyone whose credentials aren't solid gold. Once you have a mentor, stick with him/her. You want one direction, not multiples.​

Third - put together a solid 5 year plan and bankroll. Resist the urge to cheap out. It takes money to make money. If you haven't made it after 5 years, accept that you weren't meant to play poker and move on.​

Fourth - stick to either live or online play, not both. They are two different forms of the game.​

I don't usually like to give advice, but I would use what has worked for me.

Initially, seek basic knowledge of the game, until you fully master the main fundamentals, such as table position, range by position, and bank roll control.

After mastering this, if you want to become a professional, seek more knowledge of strategies and gameplay.

What will help them love and appreciate the game?

This is a tricky point, you either love poker or you hate it. Usually beginners love poker when they make money, but it only takes one loss to say that poker is rigged.

What is essential for them to know so that they can succeed?

The power of patience and the constant search for learning.

If you are in this forum, I shall assume you know the basics of poker. At this point, you are not looking to make poker your vocation...so, have fun, be patient and above all, don't take the bad beats personally.

It's easy to feel like you should win more frequently than is actually reasonable. Poker is also about losing the minimum amount just as it is about winning as much as possible.

For a new player, I would advise going through the CC poker training. It is a great foundation. Also, only play with money you can afford to lose. If you are afraid of losing, you won't win. There is so much to learn so if you are reading this I would suggest taking the CC course. Then play as many of the daily freerolls that CC hosts on Replay poker. Interact with the other players, who are a friendly bunch, and watch the comments in the chat, there is a lot of knowledge and wisdom to be found. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Study the game and take lessons. There are many good teachers online, and most post on YouTube so you can check them out and see whose style you prefer. I follow Jonathon Little, on YT and I joined his site, Pokercoaching.com.

I would advise those who are starting out to play only in freerolls. It makes no sense for a beginner to spend money on the game. When I started out, I didn't spend a cent and played only in freerolls and thus accumulated my first and quite decent bankroll.

I agree that having fun at the table is a very good advice. In addition, I would advise: learning ranges, positions and bet sizes, assessing opponents, discipline, bankroll management... Many more, but for a beginner, perhaps the first two listed are the most important.
