I started playing poker at thanksgiving with parents and grandmother. She played to win, lol. I got a real good taste for winning. I would go home with a few dollars from penny games.
Once starting to play online, I used trial and error. with a lot of error. lol.
I read forums and books, watch videos. Also talk with friends that play and my brother. It helps a lot to talk with someone you know that plays well.

I learned by first watching it on TV, and then by playing online. I further educated myself via books and forums, but I still have a lot more to learn.

Cute story, since you asked. I'd like to share about how I learned to play blackjack in a casino. I was 18 the year they opened the casinos in Atlantic City. I was living at my parents' house, then, of course. My Dad had to go to a convention at Resorts and he asked me if I wanted to go with him and try out the casino. Well, of course I said yes! He gave me $100 and told me to have fun!

I didn't realize this, but while I was at the Blackjack table, he happened to spot me and walked up behind me to see how I would play my cards. I didn't realize he was standing behind me. Not knowing a blessed thing about strategy, I split 10s. Can't remember whether I busted or not, but the minute the hand was over, he lifted me by my collar and told me, "If you're going to play on my money, you're not going to play like that."

He dragged me up to our room, sat me down, broke out a deck of cards, and proceeded to teach me basic strategy for about 3 hours before he would allow me to leave the room. he wasn't/isn't a card counter; just a good bassic strategist. To this day, when I'm losing at the casinos, I go to the BJ table and claw my way beck to a few dollars for games I like better.

This is the same wonderful older father who taught me how to play poker-7 Card Stud. It was the only poker game I knew how to play til I met the man I now live with, Bruce. When I met Bruce, he was a huge Hold 'em player. He taught me how to play poker live and then online. I've won and lost thousands playing hold 'em in the last few years, but my game is always evolving. Unfortunately, my 7 Card Stud game is shot to heck, but that's ok.

My G-ma always played 7 stud and 5 stud and draw.My g-pa(in the 50-60s) used to be a card and pool hustler. So i learned from them as a tike.
And for refence my G-pa quit playing in the late sixties due to a bad beat in 5 stud.Quad kings against quads aces on $50/bet.Large stakes really for that time.

i grew up in vegas and when my family went out to the casino's for dinner after my mom and dad used to play video poker, instead of going to the arcade i would watch the texas hold'em games, i already understood the basics of regular poker 5 card, 7 card and draw from home games with the family. the first time i ever watch a hold'em game i was 14 years old at the golden nugget. i was hooked the chips splashing in the pot, the pots being raked in and stacked up, it was amazing to me..about ten years later i read a book by david sklansky and thought i give it a try. it was a limit hold'em game back then there wasn't to many places that had no limit games. it was at the texas hotel and casino. well i got rocked but fell in love with texas hold'em.

I learned in Iraq. I tried playing in my teenage years but had no idea what i was doing.

I learned in Iraq from a good friend of mine Z. He is real good player and usually makes some good money when he plays. That is who taught me so I developed his style. I got him pegged. I guess since he taught me I know how he thinks.

I learned in college playing every weeknight for .05/.10 blinds... that was a lot of money back then... not because it was so long ago and inflation, just because we were broke college students.

It was dealer's choice with probably too many wild card games.

I learned to play over 50 years ago with family and family friends. Started with 5 card draw, 5 card and 7 card stud. At that time it was just for match sticks or toothpicks. Every once in a while, we played for pennies and nickels. Graduated to quarters and dollars in my late teens. Actually made a little bit of a living doing that and shooting pool. But a dollar was a dollar back then. Been playing online for 3-4 years now. Also played alot during my 21 years in the Navy.

I started playing poker when I was 5. My grandfather taught me the hands and how to play draw and stud. I didn't really get into it until last year when my roommate at the time, who was a big poker fanatic, got me playing. At first, I didn't really care to play, but when I entered my first live poker tournament this past January (32 player tourney), I ended up winning, which got me hooked.

My Dad taught me to play

I first began playing poker (5 draw) with my dad. He later (in my teens) invited me whenever my parents needed a fill in on their Friday and Saturday night games with friends. This continued into my twenties.

Later I played a few sit and go stud games in Vegas back in the 80's. Did pretty well.

One of my son's got me interested in Holdem, started watching on TV then my sis bought me into a small weekly tourny at a local casino. I didn't really have a clue what I was doing. I thought of Hold'em as stud with a twist. I made it to the final table but finished just out of the $$. Tried it again a few weeks later after spending some time at the casino and when there weren't any games going having several dealers play some "play" games with me. Again, I made it to the last table but out of the $$. I had spent $75 and lost it all. I can't afford that cost for training so I found pokerstars and read a bunch of books and watched some "training" videos. Though I play for play money right now, I do hope to go back to the Casino one day and give it another shot.

Where

Actually my wife found holdem 1st. She started playing and I picked it up. After about 10 minutes, I was hooked. Now, it's just a vice. :D
It's one of those love/hate games, dependin on the last card dealt.

I first heard of Holdem at a bike rally when the guys kicked my tail.. I came home, started watching on TV, then started playing on FT. Since then I have played in the wsop Ladies only event, local bars, and recently started playing live Ts at a local casino.

Have I learned. NOT enough............
