I used to play poker for play money.

PokerStars had the nicest UI for playing poker on the computer, but I had the most fun playing poker on the PS3 when PlayStation Home was still around.

PlayStation Home had the coolest poker room with 3D graphics. This is even before the time of the PlayStation Home Casino. The camera would pan as the action moved around the table and everyone played as their own ultra-customizable avatar in an underground-looking poker room. I believe different stakes were played in different identical looking rooms, however with different colored felt. If I'm not mistaken, there was a leaderboard at the back of each room listing the biggest lifetime winners and their profits.

I still miss it.

Very few times, mostly when I do it, it is to consume time while starting a tournament, or when I want to see what a game is like with which I am not yet familiar.

I used to play money a lot during my beginners time. That helped me a lot to introduce myself to the poker environment. Once I immigrated to real money I play money very seldom and only for all in gambling.

You can play for play money only at the very beginning of training in order to learn how to count and understand the rules of the game.

I had a good long break from online poker so when I resurrected my pokerstars account I hopped onto the play 2money games to warm up a bit.
It was as mental as I remember to be fair, absolute chip-fest and just flips for stacks at the lower levels.
I threw $20 real money in, played 2c/5c and the difference was literally night and day - still some silly plays silier players and idiotic hands "getting there", but generally speaking there was some respect for the money in play.

Play money is, to me, just a bit of mindless fun. See who can accumulate the most obscene stack through the most outrageous plays. It's a laugh but I would never advocate using play money games to prepare for the real tables.
Ah...But that's exactly what I did 14 years ago when learning NLH on PS play money. And it's what I'm doing now in preparation for return to real money play on ACR. Due to the fact that some folks buy play money chips in amounts that cost more than some real money deposits I have made in the past, there is a degree of seriousness to some. To the point that I've heard infrequent complaints of the play money games being rigged.:rolleyes: But focusing on repairing my leaks makes me shrug off bad results. But let's not get it twisted either. I enjoy getting the video e-mail from PS when I ship a play money tournament. Time to go work on some leaks.

Most of the poker rooms have many freerolls every day so there is no need to play on play money

What is the point in playing with play money? No risk at all.

I used to play training HU sessions on play money.
Also very high stakes MTTs looked pretty "normal" (at least for the 15 minutes I watched). Never made it to high stakes though, and buying play money seems completely counterproductive...

I do not. People play completely different when they have nothing at stake. It never really feels like playing poker when it's risky

I've tried to do it as practice, but I find it's harder to take it seriously. Especially as other people not playing seriously means they aren't playing the same way, so use as practice is limited.

In my opinion I don't think it's necessary, there are a lot of freerolls.

And sometimes I go in to play because of the variation and it helps me that not every player always has the strongest hand.

Play Money Tables

Play money tables are great fun as there is no risk. Play money is also great for learning the game before signing up to the real money sites. At the moment, I only play on real money sites as there is no time for both. But, if the feds step in again, and shut the sites down, I will see you on the nearest play money site. Whether playing for fun or the real deal, poker is a great pastime.

Usually I don 't play poker with play money, because I want my progress to be with real money. It is not the same. The games I play with play money are the home games of cardschat events!:driver:

Dont like it and heres why.

Play money poker games at the lower levels is not poker at all. Dont get me wrong you can grind it out to test your skills. Not everyone plays Game Theory Optimal (GTO) at those small play money stakes. Maybe if you can build the roll and play at the very top levels then maybe the players will play closer to GTO but in the end if you wanna learn the game that you see on TV you gotta play the Real Money games which now are available. i dont think play money poker should be called POKER. NO Risk no Reward.

Playing for play money can not improve the quality of the game, a waste of time.
