I prefer it to be short, to accommodate people who have unexpected stuff come up - so 10-30 minutes, then it's fine. When it's two hours, I agree that it delays the 'real' start of the tournament and that's not a great experience.

I'm ok with late registrations up to 30 minutes and unlikely to play any with late registrations over 60 minutes.
Where possible, I like to start on time, regardless of any late registration.
.

I should probally put the following in another thread, but this post has jogged my memory.
There is a CardsChat event that has a late registration, that I would be happy if it had none.
I must add, I have always said, it is the best CardsChat event ever. But it's just the late registration, that has caused me so much stress over the years.

The CardsChat team event.
It's stressful, until the end of late registration, when I have registered for a team member that has not turned up to play.
One day I'm going to be caught up in a double registration, and I will not be happy.

Currently, there is a 10 minute late registration. That's ten minutes when mistakes cannot be rectified.
A simple solution would be to extended the start time to 10 minutes past the hour, without a late registration.

It's quite interesting for winning because if the player takes advantage and doubles up their chips at the right moments, they can reach good positions in the tournament and win with certain intermediate hands that a solid player wouldn't play if they had entered at the beginning of the tournament!

I think the late registration is only worthwhile for the tournament organizer. I actually don't like the late registration at all. Because of this, and maybe also because of rebuys, many hands are overplayed. Especially right before the end of the late registration, new players come in and go all-in with any hand they get, hoping to double up with luck. I prefer the classic tournament more. Like the CC freerolls on 888.

It depends on the tournament and the room. For example, in WPT there are some tournaments where you enter at the last minute, and by doubling your stack you could get in the money. Or if you enter at the last minute with at least 20bb, I think it could be profitable. I do that in ACR because the late registration there is 5 hours.

Personally, I prefer tournaments that don’t have late registration, but I don’t mind it too much. I will always start on time, and appreciate the extra money into the prize pool. But I also feel that the “real” game doesn’t start until late registration is over.
Facts, the real game only starts after registration is closed. It's important to build your stack up before that time comes, because people that enter during late registration usually come in to try and gamble to flip their stacks, you can use that to your advantage. Because they will be getting it in with weak hands trying to double up

Registering late has its pros and cons, but each player chooses whether to play that way or not; not everyone feels comfortable playing with low blinds.

I register for tournaments in advance, but I don't mind when tournaments have late registration, as this allows more players to participate, and in most cases, late registration means more prize places.

poker sites make more money when they have late registration especially more than 5 mins… more players add more money to their pockets ..they ain’t doing us no favor.. that’s the way I look at it..

I do not like the constant all-ins on any Ax combo. So hard to learn the game and get a feel for the rest of the table

Sorry, i do not like it! By part because of the reason listed in my first reply.

Edit: also i agree with another reply stating: « it feels like the real game starts after late reg».

Don't like it at all! When I enter a tournament, I like to know how many players are in it. Don't like entering a tourney with say 30 players, and then end up playing with 50 or 60.

Late registration in a tournament has the advantage of increasing the prize pool and allowing more players to participate, but it also creates the feeling that the real game only begins when registration closes, because until then the dynamics are unstable and those who enter late can alter the rhythm with more aggressive strategies; therefore, although I don't avoid it, I always prefer to start from the beginning to build my game calmly and take advantage of the entire process.

I don't have much to add... I used to approach late registration very differently.

Partly because of my lack of patience to spend hours in a tournament and try to shorten the journey.

I even had good results entering late registration... I won a few times... In others, I was practically already in the prize zone with one or two winning hands.

I simply stopped doing that and I don't even have a justification for it.

But it's also necessary to analyze each case... Many times there are games with overlays where you're practically already in the prize zone, surviving only a short period in the game.

Others are more complicated... like entering the game with <20bb where we practically have no room to play.

Late registration is good. At least the aggressive players are eliminated at the beginning.

I don't like late registration, especially those with a 3-4 hour window; it's frustrating, tiring, and exhausting. I prefer tournaments with a 1 hour or 30 minute late registration.

I also prefer to start at the beginning of the tournament, but there are some tournaments where by the time late registration ends you're almost in the money (ITM), in which case it's worth it, right?

I don't know what a "non" late reg tournament is, I think all online tournaments seem to have that?
For those of you that hate playing against people who splash around before late reg ends, why don't you just play freeze-out tournaments.

Its a legitimate strategy to try get a big stack before late reg ends, and as the stacks start shrinking, you get less and less chance to make "plays" as you automatically become shorter stacked. gambling 4 buy ins at the start to try get a 3-5X starting stack before late reg ends, a legitimate and good strategy.

I like to late reg the cheaper tournaments in my schedule, mostly hypers and turbos.
It helps me add volume and since they’re low buy ins, I don’t mind the variance of starting short.

I see late registration as very format- and goal-dependent. The main advantage is time efficiency — you skip the slow early levels and still get a playable stack, which can be great if you’re multitabling or short on time. It can also slightly reduce early variance.

On the downside, you give up the chance to build a big stack against weaker players early, and you often enter with less room to maneuver postflop. Like you said, the “real” tournament tends to start once late reg closes anyway.

Personally, I usually start on time in softer fields and consider late reg only when time is limited or the structure is still very playable.

If I have a choice and free time, I will choose a tournament with more prize places - that will be my main selection criterion. And most likely it will be a tournament with late registration. If late registration has a positive effect on the amount and number of prizes, then I am in favour of late registration :)
